  • 10 inch woofer enclosure

Quick woofer enclosure to try out my newest eBay 10 inch vintage rescue woofer. 2 ft by 2ft by 1ft. I decided to try constrained mode damping with ceramic tile and tar based sealing tape from H. D. The tape has a textured polymer baking instead of foil. I used spay on adhesive to attach some polyurethane foam pads for acoustic damping of the enclosure as well as 2 thick fiberglass at the bottom. I will add more fiberglass and polyfill to get to volume I want as it is deliberately over sizied for tuning and the addition large amounts of damping material.

Very similar to the damping I used in my Transcends; vinyl backed tar tape, ceramic tile, bracing, and fiberglass batting. Inside looks a lot like this!

How did they sound? The knuckle rap test sounds pretty dead on mine. I have noticed on several speakers I have built that using 1/2 wool felt on the walls near the driver and keeping any fill material at least 4 or 5 inch away from the driver really helps in depth and not localizing the sound at the speaker.

I have done some more work and added the Focal 10V524J that I got on EBay for 20 bucks plus shipping. The surround has some cracks and holes that I repaired with Aquaseal. The Qms is still nearly 9 so I will see how the repair holds up and wait awhile to order a foam surround. I have modified the stiff polyglass cone with some slits replied with E6000 glue and PVA applied with a foam bush. Fs for thewoofer in the sealed ~ 3.5 cu ft box is 32 Hz with a Qtc just under 1. It does some nice bass and I am going try a three way using it up to 400 to 500 Hz. https://www.focal.com/en/polyglass-cone

Not bad, especially considering the walls are only 1/4" thick for an 8" floor stander. The low registers overcome the bracing a little and can be felt through the cab, but the upper frequencies where I would think the cld would be effective seem dead enough on a knuckle rap. I never did any measurements of the cab resonances and the woofer is low passed around 400hz, so it's hard to objectively state the effectiveness.

I've also found stuffing close to the woofer to be somewhat undesirable.
