  • The Bourbon Box

a friend was telling me how amazing this Blood Oath Bourbon tastes... but I'm not much of a Bourbon fan. But then I saw the wooden box that the bottle was in, and my speaker-head novice gears started to turn...

the subwoofer is the self-contained Tang Band T3-2190s unit which has a 3" subwoofer driver and a larger oval passive radiator, all in a conveniently sealed package that runs at 4 ohms. The left and right full range speakers are the buyout HiWave BMR 12 drivers -- nice and compact, pretty flat from 200 Hz to 20 kHz, and a good off-axis response. The amplifier is the 2.1 amp board with the extra 10k potentiometer for bass control (write-up by TomZ shows how to wire it up). Add in the rubber feet and the receptacles for the power and 3.5mm input and we're done.

The box is lightly sanded with the edges smoothed and then finished with a coat of Danish oil. The lid was permanently glued in place to stop it from rattling -- the Tang Band subwoofer really puts out a lot of bass for its small size. Sounds great and my friend is quite pleased with the gift. Coke can shown for size reference.

Only one thing that I may change is to put larger feet -- when the music volume is cranked, the subwoofer and the passive radiator have such a big xmax that they end up hitting the table that the box is sitting on.

Very cool! Nicely done. I've looked at that 3" sub module more than once now...

Great looking speaker! And, I've added 'Blood Oath' to my list of bourbons I want to try. So a double 'thanks!'

I was thinking of the speaker and the bourbon as the 'double' - but what's the point of a glass of bourbon if it isn't a double?!?

Good looking project, bet it sounds nice. Those BMRS areally impressive for the cost. One idea to solve your rubber feet problem is to build a plinth to attach to the bottom, then attach your feet to that.

                      Thanks for the kind words

Although, I feel like I cheated because there's no crossover (no contour filter even) and no math or construction for the self-contained subwoofer box.

With that tiny of a box, there are very few full range drivers that fit. The BMR12s just barely fit because they're so shallow. Anything with a typical cone shape wouldn't fit since the sub box takes up most of the interior.

Now all I have to do is encourage my friend to drink more bourbon so I can get another one of these boxes (which are well made and not the typical cheap/thin wood of most alcohol wood boxes)
