They look awesome. The best gifts are those that are made not bought that's for sure.

Just wondering where you got the little heat sink on your DTA2?

Thanks! I got the little heat sink from work, it's made by Zalman. I can try to get a part number for you if you like.

        EDIT: Found them. Pretty cheap.

I know this is an old thread but I just had to reply. Just when you're happy with how your project is coming out, you see something like this that makes you question your own skills. LOL This is absolutely amazing, I'm jealous. Your kids are very, very lucky, and I'm sure proud as well. I know you probably got more joy out of making these for them than they did receiving them. Great, great job, sir.

I just saw this thread for the first time myself by you bringing it up and yeah, pretty amazing skill and workmanship! Makes me feel like a rank amateur!

My kids are 19 and 16 and other than clothes and gift cards, we were at a loss. I stumbled upon Paul Carmody's Sprite build and thought it would be a great gift. My kids love their music, and their iPhones, so here we go.
A square box just wasn't going to cut it. I wanted something different. I only have 12 days (when I started) so I have to work fast. My idea is to make it look a bit retro, and a bit modern. I have a vacuum bag system I use for DIY jukebox kits I sell. It allows me to make different shapes based on molds. After coming up with the basic profile and required depth, I made the mold for bending the plywood.

                    Smoothed out with some Bondo.

Added a stop plate on one side to keep it all square to the mold.

Wrapped in packing tape to keep any extra glue from sticking to the mold.

Looks good, for the bending did you use thin sheets or kerf cuts?

Personally I find those DTA boards amazing. Ive used two of them to date and one KAB board and honestly can't fault it. Except for the lack of a Bluetooth or expandable battery packs (like the KAB).

                    Edit....damn, it's an old thread

cheers, interesting concept of the thin sheets for bending. with Kerfing you bend with the grain running length wise to stop it from breaking, but the photo on that link has it parallel. Always good to learn new methods
