  • Misfits: An economical 2way tower

I recently decided to use the Misco 6102-8 woofer that I have had sitting in my inventory for some 5 years (doh!). So I wanted to try its 4 ohm sibling. To this I decided to use the recently released Tymphany DA25BG08-06 tweeter. I could have used an even less expensive tweeter as the Misco woofer actually has very flat response out to 5k. Anyone looking for a replacement for those baby Advents, here ya go! They work quite well for that application.

The crossover is a series design (Dang you Ben! lol) using only 6 components with only 1 of those being a resistor. The slopes work out to BW5 on both drivers and cross right around 2.1k.

For the cabinets, I used 5/8 particle board for the sides, top, and back, 3/4 veneered shelving for the baffle and because I had it, a chunk of 1-1/8" for the base. I haven't decided on what I want for the finish yet. The overall dimensions work out to 8.5" wide, 6" deep and overall 40" tall. Volume comes in at about .71 cubes and with the 2"x6" port, is tuned to 40Hz. The resulting f3/6/10 is 41/35/30. I may trim the port a bit later, we'll see.

Oh and the reason behind the name. Well most here (including myself) would usually gloss over this old tech, ugly looking Misco woofer. So take the Misco and Tymphany and Misfits just kinda goes together. As soon as I figure out (or someone shows me how) I will post the pcd screen shot.

Edit/additional info. Error of omission. An additional resistor maybe used after the 3.3uf cap for tweeter level adjustment. In voicing I found a 3ohm to be about about right.

Nice two-way tower! I'm also giving serial x-overs a go for a change in my latest project. Those towers could be finished in any number of ways!

Use the Snip-it tool in Win7, or use MWsnap, or copy the cells into Word or....

          Many ways to do that.
BTW- the pics show up about 1" x 2" on the laptop.

These were at Chicago DIY and very nice they are. Small foot print, easy to listen to and the price is right.

Thanks Kenny. They did fill the room nicely. More than a few were suprised by the level of performance of these inexpensive drivers.

Can you comment a bit more on the Tymphany tweet? I think yours is one of the first design using it. how does it compare with similarly priced tweeter / higher priced ones?

Also, can you explain the 10-12db dip in the PCD screenshot at 1100 - 1200 hz. I didn't hear anything off while these were playing and the speakers sounded very nice overall. Is this dip due to the driver / crossover / baffle and can it be ignored?

Re: Misfits: An economical 2way tower

The dip might be baffle induced but I am more inclined to belive it's more of an artifact of the measurement. More of a room problem than anything else.

The tweet is really nice and one that I will be using again. Easy to work with, just the right amount of sparkle at the top. I only had to use a single series resistor to level match it to the woofer. And my measured response (frequency and t/s) matched extremely well.

Yowza...that PCD sim doesn't reflect what my ears heard last weekend. There's no way that can be correct.

Lol remember too that this is also the omnimic 1/48th octave response, no smoothing applied.
