Most Dac's I look at , say they are for headphones, can these be used for a external hi fi system also.

Hi,
Sure. You can run the analog out to an amp which powers the external speakers. I'm no expert on this. Is there a specific model you're looking at?

Those would work.. I'm not sure what you're asking. Any headphone out jack can be run to one of the inputs on your receiver or amp, etc. If you're only looking for a usb-two channel analog out type dac, then you could probably find cheaper models that would also work fine as well.Gordon

I use the UCA202. It works fine for my 2.1 computer system. I connected it, it went to the internet, downloaded updates, and has worked fine since. If you're low on money, it's the way to go.
Using the speaker out mini plug with a mini to rca converter gave me all sorts of noise, mostly from the monitor. Now it's acceptably quiet.
