  • Suggest a speaker design for me to build!

Hi all, been doing some poking around with the B652-Air speakers and now want to begin designing some floor standing speakers. My dad has the Sonus Faber Elipsa SE's and I love that sound. The mids and highs blend so nicely, never harsh and so soothing. My first plan was to build Adam McCall's 1.618 3 way towers. What I really liked about it was the HiVi yellow cones. I want something good looking, not just plain black metal or paper cones. Could someone recommend a good sounding design that also looks good?

    My current cabinet design uses:

    2x http://www.parts-express.com/hivi-f5...range--297-435
    1x http://www.parts-express.com/hivi-f8...range--297-445
    1x http://www.parts-express.com/hivi-f1...oofer--297-450 (or a Dayton 10" sub)

Hopefully you are not to tied to Mr McCalls design. It really is not a solid build really. The crossover is not well designed and lacks in some key areas.

Your picture is an excellent idea and has a lot of potential. Consider doing an MTM top section as this has some key advantages and will keep the center to center distances equal in relation to the tweeter. The HiVi planar needs to be crossed high enough to protect it. I would also consider using no more than a 4" driver there because of needed crossover point. I would aalso consider using dual 8s for the higher sensitivity gain. With dual 8s, a side firing woofer really isn't necessary.

3 posts in 7 years. Hmmmmmmm, long time in deciding a build. Plan on sticking around after someone designs a build?

Yup, I've simmed Adam's CC before, and was underwhelmed. Not really a design I'd copy.
The towers look to have a FR that's about +/-10dB, usually a "very good" design will vary closer to +/-3dB.
I'd tune his F8 box lower, and the mid chamber is much, MUCH larger than it really should be. The MTM top section shouldn't have the drivers spaced so far apart.
Also it's bad practice to use an L-pad on a woofer. Think about it; WHY would you pad a tweeter -2dB, a mid -6dB, AND a woofer (also) -2dB??
That's 2dB of wasted power (almost 1/3 of the amp's output wasted heating resistors). Obviously, you'd only need to pad the mid -4dB, right?
But that's even assuming that he's using software that knows that his paralleled mids gain +6dB in sensitivity, and can compensate for "baffle-step".

Using F/Z data in a real sim program, it LOOKS like his tweeter is still +2dB "hot", and the nids still need an additional -4dB of attenuation. And that's not accounting for baffle-step OR the F5's 1.4kHz breakup.

Thanks for the replies guys. I was suspecting that would be the case and thought maybe build the Mini Statements but again, the plain looking drivers. Also not as ideal for my cabinet front face. I haven't bought anything yet so not tied to anything. Any specific designs someone can recommend?

I've been a registered member for 7 years yes, but only doing car audio and large subwoofers. Just recently got the sawdust bug!

There are a couple of very good designs using the yellow come drivers by Ben (Wolf). One is TM with AMT, another all hivi mtm with a large planar.

Yeah- My Nephila TM towers are a great design.

I'm not sure what MTM you're referring to.

The one that bigfishe brought, where I think the XO was by you. Hivi f6 mtm with the hivi rt2c maybe? I'll try to see if I can find a snap.

Yes- I did design that one, but it's not a public design. I'm sure you could ask Steve about any info. Of the one time I've heard them, I questioned them getting honky at louder levels, but that is likely just a resistor change in the woofer notch. Elsewise, they were pretty spectacular! I did suggest this change to Steve, BTW, so it's old news.

I have some great and spectacular builds of my own.
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.
