  • RS28A & F: What out there -- if anything -- is close to a drop in?

Yes, we know a new version is coming, but it will not be a direct replacement. With so many excellent, proven and popular DIY projects out there that use the RS28 tweets, what other manufacturer's tweeter is the closest thing to a drop in replacement for these two? Any ideas?

For designs that don't run the RS28A very low in frequency (>2kHz crossover) I might try Vifa XT25TG30.
Don't waste your money on a new set of speakers, you get more mileage from a cheap pair of sneakers. Next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways it's still rock and roll to me!

Since it's said they were made by USHER, maybe some USHERs ?

The Usher 9950 doesn't have the same extended low end response of the RS28.
Something like the DX25 from Vifa or Scanspeak might work but they are more sensitive.
The new Peerless DA25BG08-06 is a viable candidate, but it too is more sensitive. Response is nicely extended on the low end and it's both smooth with low distortion to below 2000Hz.
The SB26STAC is a beauty too.
But none can be just "dropped in" to an existing design without at least some minor tweaks.
But if you are crossing above 2KHz with the RS28, then the Vifa XT19 actually would be as close to "drop in" as you could want.

Agreed Pete, except that the rs28 can cross lower. The da25 has a limit of about 1.8k vs 1.5k.for the rs28. Pretty much the same with the 26stac. Either way, they are not going to be a drop in. Both will need changes to the crossover.
