Midwest Audio Fest

It’s that time audio enthusiasts! Registration for the 2019 Speaker Design Competition is now open! Visit midwestaudiofest.com for details and to list your speaker project. We are excited to see all returning participants, and look forward to meeting some new designers this year, as well! Be sure your plans include a visit to the Parts Express Tent Sale for the lowest prices of the year, and the Audio Swap Meet where you can buy and trade with other audio fans. We hope to see you this summer! Vivian and Jill

      • i'm noticing a couple differences between mine and yours . yours is a single column mine double and yours has no negative numbers mine is almost all negative .

        • It's a real FRD. I typically would clean it up, but it seems fine. I assume this is with the x-o on the tweeter.

i thought i got the file right . it loaded , no error and looks similar to w what John's looks like , but when i open in Xsim no squiggly lines ...

Try this, and see if it works.

Delete everything above the 10hz line, and save it. It will probably leave a blank line above the 10hz line which may need to be taken out, but try it first with it blank.

If that doesn't work, select everything but the blank line, and copy it. Open a new notepad file and paste it. Then save it as an frd file. That should work.

                • John got it to open as a .frd but i think the level is to far down to open in Xsim . i manually tuned it from 48 to 89 using the offset db in options . may i need to try even more ?

                  • Be careful with ribbons. I read that you need a x-over to measure, or it is seen as a dead short to the amplifier. So, a cap of some value, and possibly a resistor in series too. Keep spl low initially, and increase once you are certain everything is working right.

I would practice making frd files using the mids, or woofer. Remember that the tweeter is going to be louder. You might want earplugs.

                    • the file we are playing with is 4th order and what i'm listening to . i only measured once . you say i need more amplitude when measuring ?

Add 90dB till you get the hang of making the file. Any HOLM measurement that is at the 0 dB line will be moved up 90dB, and show as 90dB in your sims. Then when you make your measurement for the sim, adjust the amp spl till you are measuring 0dB at about 7k like your measurement above. If you have padded it, then adjust for that padding. I may need to reword this.

No. When you measure, the sweep needs to be well above the noise floor. Maybe an 80 dB sweep, but start at lower spl, and look at the results.

I saw a tweeter sweep that unintentionally put about 400w into the tweeter. It was louder than you can imagine....then it was very quiet. Dead quiet you might say.

                            • could the fact i'm using the loopback be the issue ?

i notice when i use some of the empty tones that the level is way down 30-40db ....

Not familiar with the empty tones you mention. I'll post a couple pictures for an example in about 20 minutes.

Here's my filtered tweeter response at a couple different spl, and with the furnace making noise on two of them.
