  • Rs284 not available?

I came across a project that uses a scanspeak discovery 8 inch woofer and the Dayton RS284 tweeter. This is pretty much the design I've been looking for however the Dayton Tweeter for some reason is no longer available? Why didPE discontinue their RS tweeters? Could anyone suggest a high end tweeter thats comparable as a substitute? ( please don't recommend the 1-1/8" silky). The site where the project can be found is Rhythm Audio Design. Bonaventure 2 way is the project.

The RS28A is no longer available. They are coming out with a new version but it will not be a drop in replacement. Any other tweeter will require a new crossover for the tweeter.

You are likely going to need to find some used ones in classifieds or eBay, or pick a different design. The new ones measure too differently to just drop in. Last ones were discontinued due to becoming nla by the manufacturer.

Urgggg!! Ok thanks. Kinda frustrated because I paid the 10-bucks for the design. I did find "new" rs284's on Amazon but they are $120 a pop. Out of curiosity, what did PE charge for them new?

Does the design you want to build use the RS28A (aluminum dome) or the RS28F (fabric dome)? I ask because I have a brand new, still in the unopened boxes, pair of RS28F that I might consider selling for a fair price + shipping.

The design uses the Aluminum dome version of the tweeters.

As far as crossovers go, aren't the A and F interchangeable?

I have no problem using the sik dome RS's...if they can be substitutedthat is. I cant post the crossover schematic because the plans specify for persnal private use.

The F and A might be interchangeable if you don't mind a deviation in the top octave. They're very similar at the low end so the crossover point would remain fairly smooth.

If someone would be willing to help with a new crossover I'd be very interested in your rs284f's. The woofer to mate it to is the Scan Speak Discovery 8" (8ohm). Any crossover assistance from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

If you haven't purchased the SS Discovery woofer yet, my 2-way RS duets (that took 1st place in their category at PE's 2012 MWAF) used the RS28F paired with an RS225-8. I've attached a photo of the RS duet and would be happy to send you my write-up that includes the crossover information if you send me a private message that includes your email address.

Vented, in a standard alignment, the RS225's F3 is 30 Hz in a 1.5 ft3 box. The SS's F3 is significantly higher at 41 Hz in a 1.8 ft3 box. The SS is ~3 dB more sensitive and will put a couple more dB before xmax is breached.

I'd be interested in Paul K's XO as well.
