  • CD Player Recommendations?

Anyone know of any great deals out there right now on a nice sounding single disc player? I'm thinking somewhere in the $400 - $500 range maybe. If you don't know a current deal, do you have any players you would recommend as a good value in this range?

Maybe there's an excellent deal out there that I'm not aware of, that maybe someone here knows about.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

How about an external DAC? Both of these are in your price range.

    As for standalone players:

Slightly OT, I have the Auzentech Prelude audio card in my pc
      http://www.auzentech.com/site/products/x-fi_prelude.php

which is where I do 85% of my critical music listening. Are those DAC solutions listed in Face's post superior?

If I were in the market for nice CD unit, I would get that Cambridge for sure

You could check out the Emotiva ERC-1. Seems to be a good value.

If I were buying a cd player today I would look on Audiogon for an original Rega cd player. They come up in the $300 to 350 range. They are said to have a very analog sound if that is important to you. I have a Vdac and like it but it is not head and shoulders above the other 4 dacs I use.

My choice in that range would be a Music Hall 25.2

A few bucks more for something that will spin anything would be an Oppo 83SE. Of course, computer audio will beat either option ;)

It's common for them to have transport issues.

Take a look at the Onkyo C-S5VL. It has a very nice Wolfson DAC. I may get one of these for myself later this year.

I looked long and hard at the Onkyo. Pricewise it compared favorably to Marantz SA8003(and 4). Then someone posted a review on Amazon saying the Onkyo comes very close in performance to the Marantz. So the temptation increased.

But in terms of great deals, IMO the emergence and supremecy of blu-ray has created bargains in second hand, high-end, DVD-based universal players. The gold standard seems to be Denon DVD-3910 ($250 - $350), and I had been shopping for one on Audiogon in the right price, condition and shipping origin.

Then I saw a deal for a Marantz DV7001 for low $200s and pulled the trigger. I'm very glad I did. It plays SACDs and DVD-A's very well, but I'm really impressed and satisfied with it's redbook performance. Much more rich, tonally balanced, and complete sounding than the Marantz CD5001 which I also have.

If your intent is music, get the Oppo BDP-80. Audio section is same as BDP 83. Price well within your range. Dual DACs, great sound, universal, what more can you ask for.

I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

I can tell you the Oppo is an amazing player! I sold my $3500 DAC/Transport setup for the Oppo.

Which Oppo? I know others who've sold very expensive units for the 83SE.

The BDP-80 audio section is not the same as the 83, not even close. The 80 uses an audio section much closer related to their older 983H/980H players.

If you want the best 2ch playback the 83SE is the one to look at, not the regular 83, and not the 80.
