  • MCL or EconoDeluxe or ?

    Hey Everyone,

Moderate time stalker, and finally wannabe builder!

I'm sittin on bout $500 for a set of speakers. This price does not include MDF just everything else from the wire plugged into the amp and on.

I have been reading for a while like I said, I have read quite a few build threads, have followed closely information about Zilch's amazing econo's and many other builds. Giving that I am a first time builder and probably won't build again for a few years, I want to get it right (don't we all?) and use a proven plan.

I love bass, like it loud and heart palpitationy , I have been reading a lot about the Magna *** Laude's and the builders who have mentioned them suggest they sound great and play hard. Conversely there are some very strong supporters of the econowave series.

    Speaker Duties:

    1) Playing Music @ home - Techno, Dance, Electronic, Trip Hop, Rock, D&B, Pop and heaps of over styles. As you can see from my music choice bass response and clarity is important, highs to match would be exquisite.

Playing room is 5m L x 3.5m W x 2.7m H with one who long wall missing that opens into kitchen and dining area which is significantly bigger. But I want to be able to hear anywhere in the house, which I'm sure I'll be able to.

    2) Playing Music @ Parties - Simply put..... Loud.

    3) Mains for HT - I Figured since I am building good speakers I may as well listen to movies properly.

So. Magna *** Laude's from all accounts rock like I am hoping, Econowave Deluxe is meant to have great directivity and SQ (though I'm not sure one 12" woofer will supply my bass needs?) Can anyone else suggest projects with enough information about cab design, crossover construction and fits $500 budget that rocks like I'm hoping? Good SPL, good SQ, good Bass and >$500. Feel free to support my findings as well. Being right sometime would be a great moral boost

I'm open to 2way, 3 way or whatever way, size also isn't a huge issue. I can accept anything with a front baffle up to 1.5m x 50cm. Though I imagine with my price point, 3 or 3.5 way will probably be a limit.

All the best to everyone, I love your work and thank-you for providing this amazing community!

    Mitchell.

PS. I realize that my post is fairly broad in what I'm after but I am just trying to provide an impression of my goals. Refinement comes with greater understanding, experience and plagiarism.

For high volume levels you can't beat eWave with high efficiency pro drivers. Just add a subwoofer or three if you want to shake the walls. It may be stretching your budget to do it all now but it is easy to add the sub(s) later.

        Hi Mitchell,

My Corner Line Array might be a candidate project for you to consider. You would want to place the arrays in the corners of a narrow wall so that they are 3.5m apart. The question is: How could both arrays be corner loaded considering the missing long wall? Could you add a partition wall to complete the missing corner? You would need a equalizer (around $300) for this system which might break the budget...or not.

Check out my project here: http://trueaudio.com/array

The discussion thread is here: http://techtalk.parts-express.com/sh...ad.php?t=21430

        Enjoy your project!

Re: MCL or EconoDeluxe or ?

There are indications in the "Flex Your Mettle" that doubling up the woofers and running the second one in "0.5" mode will provide the requisite low-frequency augmentation for the high-efficiency pro-driver builds. I am doing that in separate Dayton KD kit trapezoidal cabs, i.e., a "modular" approach. They can be stacked as towers, or deployed separately, even used as subs.

Conceptually, it's a versatile configuration worthy of pursuit; I'll report my findings over there. When I demoed both the Standard and Deluxe eWaves at NorCal DIY, many liked Standard best, very likely because it has extended bass response. Deluxe is a better speaker, but should be augmented with assist, a second woofer, or sub(s) to provide the requisite low frequency extension. What Toole and Olive say is correct -- here in the USA, we initially judge speakers by their bass response.

With these additional considerations, EconoWave will do what is required in all of those applications....

Same here. With my Econo-Waves and 4 8" self-powered subwoofers bass is a BLAST....

Re: MCL or EconoDeluxe or ?

                Paul. I really can't add a wall. It's a rental house :(

Seems all this time I have been misreading the pricing on the econo deluxe anyway. I was thinking $400/pair not each lol. So it sounds like a 2.5 way vented econowave standard or MCL. The econo supporters certainly jumped on me

I was thinking bout it and would it make sense to wire two woofers in the econo like you would in Magna? Xover in series woofers wired in parallel to maintain 8ohms for easy driving? Obviously this would be 2 way instead of 2.5 though. Like i said I'm happy to build a bigger box and try and tune em between 30-35 Hz. Please don't think I know anything about designing electrical networks. Like I said (yoda voice) plagirasim is strong in this one.

I would like to keep all drivers in 1 box ( per speaker of course) so that they can be lugged around a bit easier. Not that this will happen a lot though.

Has anyone ever contemplated a 3 way econo?

I don't know where to really go with this now. Augmented econo is sounding like a plan but there is no plans! Kinda wish this stuff was easy and I could just make a Magna *** laude with an econo horn instead of tweeter lol.

If anyone has any suggestions or would like to help work on designing an Xover for the above 2/2.5 way feel free to reply. Otherwise ill just wait till zilch posts his info.

                All the best

Re: MCL or EconoDeluxe or ?

EconoWave Standard has plenty good bass with a single woofer.

If you want higher efficiency, step up to SR with double woofs, stretching the budget a bit. Woofs are on sale right now:

                  http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=295-032

Remember that the quoted costs include cabs. Look at the "Subtotal" column in the matrix for the no-cab cost:

Re: MCL or EconoDeluxe or ?

A tiny stretch on the budget might be doable. The sr's certainly have good efficiency but would 2 woofers allow for a good increase in bass extension?

If you lik zilch I can take this convo into the pcd thread just to try and keep it together. Compiling knowledge is good.

From the comments surrounding the PA310 it doesn't have great bass extension and not alot can be done about it. Would porting it with dual woofs and a bigger box help? I'm intrigued because that efficiency is great, just need to get it tuned down to mid 30's. They would certainly rock then. Would it be possible to keep the impedance load around 8ohms to keep the speakers easy to drive for us without great amps?

I certainly favor having it all in one place; I'm presently tracking multiple threads in several forums and consolidation of knowledge derivative of these efforts works to everyone's advantage in the future. Expertise is also more likely to follow the questions and help with the answers over in "Flex It."
