  • PE site slow, or is it me?

We had our cable re-strung yesterday after the linemen from the electric company pulled the cable anchor out of the house. Since then, PE is slooooow! Other sites seem to come up faster and I just checked my speed on CNet and I'm hitting over 7Mbps when the wife isn't watching videos on her laptop. I'm not sure if that's fast, slow, or average for a cable modem on our system. Is it just me or are others having problems too?

Re: PE site slow, or is it me?

The main site occasionally hangs up, and when it does I notice it shows "Waiting for Google Analytics" in my browsers progress bar. GA is data harvesting software a lot of websites use, which is fine but all those Java and Flash plugins they use slow everything down.

What happened to a simple text based cookie?

It doesn't appear to be slow for me at this time.

It has been slow for several weeks now, sometimes painfully slow. The path to the site seems OK, since a ping test is fairly consistent and shows nothing unusual. It appears to be slow at the server.

Use Firefox and install the Adblock plug in. Using IE with most websites the way they are configured now is like going back to dialup.

Thanks for tip! I just installed Adblock and things seem a little faster in general.

I am finding it very slow to refresh. Sometimes, very long......

I run Chrome with Ad-Block, but the latency I have noticed comes from the Google spyware.

I use Internet Explorer most of the time, but it's slow, been REAL slow last few days... so, when this happens, I switch over to Foxfire... nothing like it!! Tried it several times to search PE, works great.

On occasion it's slow. Adblock with Firefox is OK. The "NoScript" add in will give you more control. Sometimes the slow comes from links to places like the SSL certificate agency and all the social network crap.

Google Analytics is not "spyware". I think for you to say this implies a serious misunderstanding of the technology being used by PE. Most all web sites use cookies to determine usage patterns; in this respect, Google Analytics is no different. If you don't wish to have Google Analytics cookies placed in your browser's cache, simply block them.

There is a huge difference between a text cookie and software which actively tracks your web habits.

It isn't just cookies - it is a java script that installs when you visit a site. This is done clandestinely, and without user permission. I understand many people are A-ok with software being installed and system changes without their knowledge or permission but please don't drink the Google kool-aid.

Here is how to block it.

Here is a Google search of people reporting problems with the crappy software slowing down there internet experience, along with the typical Google responses.

Before GA was a Google tool, it was an expensive paid service called Urchin.

In any event, running software or scripts that collect personal data without an easy way to opt out or an obvious install is spyware, the difference is in how you perceive it. GA is doing nothing that thousands of applications blocked by Spybot and Ad-Aware are not doing, except it is pushed onto your PC by a giant.

The information that Google Analytics collects is only relevant for the site that you're visiting - PE in this case. There nothing that's being collected or reported beyond this. IMO, The term, "spyware", implies a very different type of intent.

If you feel so strongly that Google Analytics is spyware or malicious, what do you think about PE using it? After all, it was their choice, not Google's.
