Another question besides how big is how much do you want to spend? Speedsters also could be an option as a small high end monitor but that's more pricey.

I thought the woofer was no longer available for that design.

Looks like you're right I thought Menicus still had some kits left but it looks like they're sold out.

If you're in the $200.00 price range I'd consider the Levitations in my sig as a possibility if 8" x 12" x 11 1/4" isn't too large for where you want to place them.

              Take it easy

I've built the Overnight Sensations, and you will not be disappointed. Very very good design, and the price is right for the quality you get. If you want to save a few bucks, and some building hours, there's a kit for them with everything you will need right down to the screws here: http://www.diysoundgroup.com/speaker...eaker-kit.html

Another small desk top proven design that I've built is Wolf's PC speakers. Don't let the size fool you. These simple little speakers have output that literally made jaws drop when I was done building them... plus they are cheap cheap. Just a thought in case you decide on something smaller. *pic below*

                  Really?? Just like that?

No offense to Paul, but what is it with people and the OS for desktop duty? It's got a high xo with wide vertical spacing. And yes, I've heard them. What ever. I'll leave it alone before I offend somebody.

If you have the budget, I'd suggest the Alexandre Chamagne design here: http://zaphaudio.com/contest.html

It's a very low cross over, but you're in the nearfield so it can take it. That would work on a desk. Zaph says this about it: "And with the low crossover point, off axis did not change at all anywhere in front of the speaker. The system was a pure point source, and power response was a flat line aside from the tweeter's rolloff. At lower levels, this system without question sounded the best." You could probably eliminate the expensive LCR on the woofer too.

If you don't have the budget, consider full range.

                    ryan,

Not trying to hijack the thread, but could you point out where someone could find some of those EL70 drivers? This isn't the first time I've heard someone rave about them. Might be something I would like to try out one day...

I have to admit it's one of the first speakers that came to my mind as well. I think the fact that's it's low costing and can potentially be bought with a flat pack for the cab is what makes them leading candidates. I think for the money and ease it ends up being a way to get your feet wet in screw driver and glue assembly DIY.

Once my daughter turns 5 we might use the same woofer and flat pack but change the tweeter as a father/daughter speaker project for her.

Ya, they're dissapearing fast. Not really gonna be around much longer. I was more pointing out the idea of using full range with computer eq.

                        Anyways, try these:

Thank you for this reply. That makes a lot of sense and I can appreciate that. I suppose my bias comes into play, that I would prefer to build my own. You're totally correct that for some, it's an easy way into the pool. Thanks.
