Why don't I ever see these discussed as subwoofer amps?

    http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=245-500

For $299 you get 1,100 Watts in 4 Ohm Bridged mode, with an adjustable 4th order L-R active filter, peak llimiters, and you could use balanced inputs and Speakon connectors if you want. Seems like it could be a killer sub amp, or are people just afraid of the fans?

There are a few people that use these Crowns, and generally seem not to be taken seriously for doing so.
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

I have one of these, I think lots of people do.

I've had it awhile but I think I need that Art Cleanbox or something, it doesn't put out much power. I haven't bothered to actually see what the problem is yet.

It has serious fan noise issues.

I think a lot of people think pro sound gear is not hi-fi. I find this funny considering pro gear is used to make recordings. The other problem IMO is that the drivecore are ugly. Also you have a pm.

Jeff, if you go to hometheatershack where guys _really_ build subs you will see tons of builds using pro amps.
I use an old Crown PS-400 for my sub.
And the drivecore amps are very well regarded.
The only downside I see in pro amps are the fans. But the newer class-D amps are very efficient.

Yeah those guys over there build some real monsters. LMS Ultra 18's and big Crown amps flying all over that forum.

Incidentally, this may be a strong contender for my new amp down the road. Thinking of upgrading to one of the new Stereo Integrity 18 D2's, and I'm going to need more juice...

I want one. When (if) my Nr709 sells, and I pay some bills I'll pick one up.

I use pro amps for even small sealed subs. It's nice having 3500 watts on tap.... though I blow the breaker if I use it all :D

Grey, you mind PM'ing or emailing me details about your 709? I need something to replace my 608 that is 4 ohm stable!

Re: Why don't I ever see these....?

There has actually been quite a bit of discussion about the Drivecore series as sub amps and main amps. The XLS1500 and above have a significantly better S/N ratio than the XLS1000, and are often recommended if the application is a mains amp. The XLS 1000 makes a great amp for a pair of subs.

User reports say that the fans either never come on or are inaudible if they run.

XLS1000 here for sub duties and it rocks for that purpose.
I don't like it as a full range amp, but I wish I got to hear the 1500 due to the improved SNR that fastbike mentioned.

Jeff, the fans are simply a non-issue in this particular amp.

As for why the XLS drivecores is not used as a sub amp... because it's just too good as a stereo amp :P

But seriously there's a lot of people using them. You've just been oblivious.

Ive got the xls2000 and you need the cleanbox pro to convert rca to xlr. It does it good superbly and i have no complaints about it. There is no fan noise and the settings are easy to configure. Not only it drive sub, its a 2 channel stereo amp which you can drive your speakers with it.

I have a 1500, Jeff- and I like it alot! I use it for mains. =-)
I plan on another one down the road for Charybdis with the Dayton Proto-LVS15.

I might even part-out Marianas if that does as well for me!

I use an EP4000 for my pair. With a 5 minute fan swap and a couple 1/4"-RCA adapters its been working fine for almost three years. +1 on the Home Theater Shack forums, those guys LOVE pro amps for sub duties.
