  • Nice surprise! Measured some Audyn caps

I needed to order a few parts to build Wolf's Stances so I decided to try the Audyn caps that PE has started to carry. They are labeled as +/- 5%. I measured them with my Fluke DMM and they all measured within 0.5% (4 out of 6 were right on the money). Hopefully they sound good too :p

Glad to hear they spec out good. I've a 8.2 and 22 that also spec out as measured.
    Reliable values are good!

I would also like to comment that I thought the Beston's looked kind of cheap in pictures.... but they actually look really nice and well built in real life. Glad I picked up a pair when they were the DOTD! Time to go out and make some MDF dust.

Arlis, it was 76 today, and it's supposed to be warmer tomorrow. When it's in the 50's next week, with the heater on in the shop, that's perfect for makin' sawdust. I have some UGLY but free 3/4 CDX I'm gonna lam some 1/8" masonite on one side for something I'll build. It's pieces already (22" x 48"), 12 of 'em, and I couldn't let it go in a dumpster. I got the masonite free too, and the glue....Ya' know that yellow glue that's starting to get thick is fine when you add some Everclear to it...

Good to know. I have had my eye on those, but haven't really needed any XO caps recently. I'd be hard-pressed to actually "hear" a difference anyway, but please let us know if your Stance project sounds like complete garbage, because at least we’ll know where to look first. And if the caps are actually OK, then we need to get you some kitty litter ASAP :p

P.S. I'm pretty sure Ben's Stance sounded even better when it was glowing in the dark last weekend. Mind over matter?? Perhaps.

FWIW, I had a WIMA on the tweeter, and a GE and 'M' on the woofer. I spec'ed the kit with Solens on the woofer, and PulseX everywhere else.

Re: Nice surprise! Measured some Audyn caps

I finally got around to acquiring a couple of Audyn Q4 3.3 uF caps to test and eventually use someday. Using my normal WT2 cap testing set up. I found the results also impressive.
Over 31 data points ranging in freq. from 10 hz to 20 kHz test average was 3.2984 uF with only a sigma of 0.006994 uF yielding a coeficient of variation of only 0.21%. In the 100 to 20 kHz range, ESR varied in the range of 0.12 to 0.16 ohms. The level of ESR seems to fall in between pure PP (usually in miliohms) and PET (0.2 - 0.4 ohms).

Next PE order will include a couple of Audyn Plus caps which have higher voltage rating. Evidently, and no surprise, Tony Gee rated the Plus significantly higher than the Q4 (9 vs 6.5). The history of Tony's ratings follows a similar pattern for the most part. Larger, more expensive, higher voltage caps rate higher in his view using his own test methodology which is very un-scientific.

It's a shame PE doesn't also sell the True Copper and Reference models, but IT sells LOTS of different caps and coils.

This all sounds pretty good. After I got a cheap LCR meter I went around and measured all the caps I had and some of the Dayton and Erse caps I had were far enough off that I set them aside and ordered replacements.

They had various True copper series in a random box at the sidewalk sale; mostly 1.0uF IIRC, for about $20 each. Are they worth more than that??

Used the Audyn's in my Chameleon's. They sounded great, I thought and measurements were right on.

Yep, you can almost bet your life on Tony's opinion:

"and no surprise, Tony Gee rated the Plus significantly higher than the Q4 (9 vs 6.5). The history of Tony's ratings follows a similar patter for the most part. Larger, more expansive, higher voltage caps rate higher in his view using his own test methodology with is very un-scientific."

If it costs more, it's better, according to Tony, almost without failure.

The TC's feel like lead they are so heavy. I have a single 1.2uF sample, and I like the quality of it. I think the 3.3uF value is the largest they have available, and the 1.2 was 33E last I looked, IIRC.
