  • Visiton 9029 W200S 8" 4ohm, anyone familiar with?

    I'm considering various 8" drivers for an upcoming project. It pretty much has to be a 4ohm to get the sensitivity needed. The Visiton W200S seems to model very well in a TL and is fairly inexpensive. Has anyone had experience with this driver? Any impressions? Any independent measurements?

    Dan, note this woofer's Xmax is pretty small at 3.5 mm Peak, which will limit how loud you can play it.

      Color me jaded, but a flimsy stamped frame, small motor, below average excursion and shiny treated paper cone all remind me of $12 woofers - not $45 woofers.

      It would be interesting to see some independent T/s measurements done on it. The supplied measurement chart shows a cliff in the response typical of poor cone and motor designs...
      Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

        Good points and I agree with you both. I was hoping someone would have personal experience with it and maybe have independent measurements that told a more complete story.

        I'm looking for 8"ers that reach around 91-92db 2.83V/1m sensitivity and that are reasonably priced without too low an Re.

        The RS225-04 has the sensitivity, but a pretty low Re of 2.9 ohms.

        Both the 8 ohm and 4 ohm Silver Flute W20RC38's look like they would work, but with a .28 Qes, they are not likely to play well in a TL, which is what I was hoping to use them in.

        The Peerless 830869 HDS Nomex might be a candidate, but it is $77 and Qes is pretty low at .33

        The Dayton DS215 almost gets there.

        I don't want a wide box or I'd consider using the Aura NS10's that I already own.

        Anyone have any suggestions!

          This one isn't a 4 ohmer, and sensitivity is only 88dB 2.83V/m, but what about this?

          I'll keep looking...

            Maybe this?

            EDIT: just realised the Qts is only .28 on this one, can't find the Qes...

              You guys know better than I what you are looking at, but I found this that if I am not missing anything may work well and at a good low price... I hope... :o

              http://www.mcmelectronics.com/produc...-2960-/55-2960

              If not can you give me some pointers on what to look at?

              I like the die cast frame, Qes of .69, sensitivity of 92dB 1W/m, Qts of .56.

              Con is that Xmax is lower than a sub at 5.4mm, but would that be sufficient for a TL?

                Re: Visiton 9029 W200S 8" 4ohm, anyone familiar with?

                Here are some 3rd party measurements for the 8 ohm Silver Flute woofers.
                http://chadgray.info/projectdetail.cfm?ProjectID=24
                So maybe get one 4 ohm Flute and measure it to see if the Qts is higher than specs. like the 8 ohm version. If it does not meet your needs return it.

                Here is another thread about 8" woofers.

                  I've used the silver flute 8". Here's what they measure out of the box:

                  * f(s)= 37.68 Hz
                  * R(e)= 7.32 Ohms
                  * Z(max)= 44.22 Ohms
                  * Q(ms)= 2.425
                  * Q(es)= 0.481
                  * Q(ts)= 0.402

                    Thanks for the suggestions and info guys! Keep them coming.
                    :applause:
                    I considered the HiVi, but I still want to look for a little higher sensitivity. The Scan Discovery would work, but I'd like to pay in the $60 range rather than the $90 for this particular project, though things could change depending on what I decide to pair with it.

                    Thanks for the measurement info and links on the Silver Flute 8. That is very encouraging. They appear to be a tremendous value. I will model them in a TL and see how they look given more accurate TS values and probably pick up a pair if the model looks decent.

                    I did go ahead and measure one of the Aura NS10's I have in case I decide to jump up in size and it looks excellent. Re is a little low at about 3.16, but I can probably deal with that with a higher dcr inductor without losing too much sensitivity. I'd like to keep my impedance at a low of 3.5 overall, if possible. Raw sensitivity around 91.5 or so and an F3 of around 28hz in a 53 liter, 64" folded MLTL. This gets me to about 106db with just 30w input, which is about what I was targeting. They are only using less than 1/2 their xmax at that level.

                      Hey Dan,
                      I obviously don't know what your project is and if these would work, but have you looked at the Betsys? Not 4 ohm, but the sensitivity is up there- http://www.wildburroaudio.com/speakers.php

                          I don't know how I missed this thread originally. Lots of good suggestions in there.

                          I want to look closer at the Peerless 830869 HDS Nomex in a TL. It is a little higher than I wanted to pay, but I can get them with PE credit I have coming, so they don't cost me a dime, which is a big plus and would allow for someone else to build the project, whereas the Aura NS10's are NLA. The Silver Flute 8's are still in the mix as well.
