    Re: Voxel - a mini-sub+

Does anyone know other places where we can get this driver, maybe there are some Canadian or European shops which may have stock of this driver?

something to think about with these little drivers, which are absolutely amazing by the way, would be efficiency. these are some power hungry little monsters. I have 2 in an enclosure and have 240 watts going to them. I think they would like more. you need something that can truly drive them to get the best out of them. wimpy amps need not apply.

Please forgive my ignorance and short reasoning. Here it goes:
A neo magnet is much stronger and smaller than a ferrite magnet, this makes neo a better choice for drivers?

It seems that Paul has a preference for ferrite in his latest builds.... is it price/performance or something else?

stronger magnet should equal better speaker. I have both versions of this driver and can not tell any difference in sound quality. also the neo mag is about x2 more expensive.

              Re: Voxel - a mini-sub+

I thought I'd take a minute to post some pics of my finished Voxel. This is not-quite 1/2" birch ply finished with 3 coats of Enduro-Var.

I don't like unfinished edges and I wanted to also cover the nail holes, so I bought some 1/2" aluminum angle, mitered it to fit, and glued it on.

The finished product is quite nice. It's got a modern, "West Elm" kind of feel to it.

As for the sub, this thing is amazing for the bass it puts out considering the size. I wish it had a bit more sensitivity, though. 82db just isn't much, and it has a hard time keeping up with a pair of even moderately sensitive speakers.

Still a great design! Kudos, Paul!

Wow, angled aluminum. That's a first for me, and it looks GREAT!

What are you using to power it?

Paul, I'm using my DIY 2.1 amplifier that I designed and built (details here). It uses 2 of the TDA7492 amps, and it's got more than enough power (capable of a "real" 50W into 4-ohms in a mono load).

I reworked my amp to provide a +12dB gain difference between the stereo speakers and the sub this morning, and it's keeping up well now. I just wasn't expecting to need to provide that much gain difference in the first place (a 16x power difference). However - that's why sub amps need to have so much more power than normal stereo amps ;).

i've come close to building one or two of these several times, but also wondered: is there a similar design/footprint that will dig just a smidge deeper?

or am i overthinking and F3 35Hz is plenty?

If you can find another sub the size of a shoebox that can play below 35 Hz, build it!

Only one I know of is the W3-1876S model with 2 PR's I did a bit back. It will not take as much power or put out as much sound however. It will hit 30Hz.

better question: are there any proven smallish designs out there that will play accurately (not thumpy) into the high 20s or low 30s?

Swinginguitar - I recommend that you start your question as a new thread - you're likely to get far more responses and perhaps a better solution that way. This thread is in respect to the Voxel sub, and I think it would be best to keep this thread's responses towards conversations about the Voxel.
