  • Extrapolated Theorization: "Xenoliths"....

Xenolith (definition): a rock formation within another rock formation.

How aptly does this describe what I've wanted to do for awhile with the miniscule Xenum design? Very! So, take a 0.23ft^3 knock-down cab, and use a liter for the Xenums, sealed and stuffed, and use the remaining 6.1 ltrs for the woofer: the DC160S-4, vented of course.

    Inspiration:

So I went back a ways in my speaker designing, and dredged up the old files from Darren's work for all 3 drivers from the mass-file he unleashed upon the DIY community before his departure. I then proceeded to modify them from the orig data files to suit the box in question with regard to really the only way to place them all on the baffle.

    Detailed drawing of assembly:

Using these T/S for the mid and woofer:

...Came up with these box alignments:

The Xmax on the W3-315E is good until 400Hz at 100dB in a sealed liter, so I aimed for that region in the xover. DC160S4 hits Fb/3/10 of 55/62/44Hz.

Relative BSC effect plots and driver positions:

Being that I did everything from scratch on the Xenum portion, I was still surprised that it virtually matched the results on the initial Xenum sim from 2008, and the parts list did not need to change at all. Below is the 2014 'Resim' data...
    On-axis:

    5* above axis:

    Xenum xover:

Turns out the Fc of xover is closer to 2.7k than I thought previously, and the blend is very nice still! Since the Xenums were a SXO design, I stepped out on a limb to make it an SXO 3-way, which I have yet to build one of. I've simulated before, but not built any yet, and this turned out to be a relatively easy project with only 13 parts for a 3-way. You cannot model an SXO 3-way in PCD in one session. It has to be done in tiers. I did the MT, then used the MT FR and Z plots in combo with the woofer data to get the results.

And final sim of the 3-way:

Xover points are closer to 450 (BW1/2) and 2.7k (BW4/3).

I'll post pics as these progress, as I have 5 sided boxes at the ready, all glued up!
    Thanks for looking,
    Wolf

PS- I did change the Rs value to compensate for the coil DCR in the box sim, though it is not pictured correctly.

Hmm. On the 3way I'm just finishing, I ended up with a sxo on the mt portion and pxo between them and the woofer. I think I may go back and try series as well just to see. I've only got 11 parts on it as of now.

This looks very good by the way. Man you've been busy lately!

Looking nice! Was just curious though, whats the depth of the box? I've been staring at the first pic of the speaker diagram and can't figure it out :(

I wish I had more funds to do another build. My wife would be so ticked though lol.

Seriously Wolf, the designs never cease!! Though you are quite a bit further along than I, This design is quite similar to another I have just ordered parts for. Just as you, I am building a set of mirror-image 3-ways, the right and left utilizing the Rs180-4 in a sealed enclosure, along with the Xt25sc90, and the Rs100-p's. Eventually I plan to construct 2 pairs of these, for fronts and rears, building a center channel that adds a second Rs180-4. The center channel shall likely find the Rs180's wired in series, and flanking the Xt25sc90, and the Rs100p. I've already received a few sheets of the same Kaiser Aluminum 6061-t6 from SpeedyMetals.com, found in the Q' series. This will serve as the baffles for this 'quintet', and hopefully when I am able, a good deal of the cabinet of my high-end build. For certain, the crossover design and nom de guerre will be far more of the conventional variety, than those of our seasoned thread-starter!!

When I buy knock-down cabs, they get constructed faster.

Josh- the cabinet from PE's part number is listed in the picture, so all you have to do is look that number up. I think it's 8.5" normally, but I added another 3/4" baffle layer.

          Later, and thanks, guys!

That's some big words in the subject.

I have a design that looks almost exactly like this that I never showed to the public; same tweeter, and almost the same mid. It sounded pretty damn good, though. Maybe I should dredge it back up. I'm not sure if I could cobble it together in time for Iowa, but I'm thinking about it now.

I ordered the 2 remaining coils that I required for this today.
I hope to be assembling networks soon, and making the chambers for the mids and milling baffles.

Wolf, this might be hard to believe but I was just going to send you an email tomorrow to see if you wanted to help with a speaker just like that using the Anarchy woofer. I actually saved that exact photo to send as well! Strange.

I'm open to the adaptation. I used the DC160S-4, as I already have them, for this one- but sure- that would be a dynamite little 3-way at a slightly less sensitive spot. 4/8 ohm? Spec sheet? (Edit- found it! The 4 ohm might be better in terms of sensitivity. I can only find the specs for the 8 ohm version.)

                    I'm game for that...

I'd like to call those the 'Meteorites', as they will have other-worldly impact and slam like no other in that size class, xenoliths are common in meteorites, and they also will be HEAVY for their size.

                        Re: Extrapolated Theorization: "Xenoliths"....

Okie- Dokie! It turns out the Anarchy and DC160S-4 are not that different in terms of box construction. They both like the box with a 7.5" single flared port. This means the inner port exit has to be placed above the triangular midrange chamber. No biggie.

I get Xmax range to 35Hz for the DC160S-4, and nothing beyond for the Anarchy8ohm, at an output of 100dB. The DC160S-4 loses about 2 cycles to a 64Hz F3, but F10 is now 40Hz (opposed to 44 before) with the stuffed arrangement. If the walls are lined, it may get more boomy, but the F3 is 59Hz, and the F10 is still about 40Hz- all with the longer port.
I think I like the original alignment for the DC160S-4 better than these 2 that follow, but if you want to experiment with both:

The Anarchy gains an additional 12Hz F3 for 50Hz result over the original's 62Hz. F10 is about 37Hz.

Next up, a simulation of FR! I won't post the schematic unless EricH says its okay.

And here she be! 16 parts for this one, because I had to kill the breakup from the aluminum cone, tweak for the different impedance woofer, and padd the Xenum portion along with a tweeter pad change to get it to look right. The 3.3ohm changed to a 4 ohm, and the 25 ohm changed to a 20 ohm. I was surprised I only lost a couple dB in sensitivity. Call this an honest 82dB.

                            Meteorites:

                            Resistor change in Xenum sector:
