  • China is attempting to guess my password?

Got an E-Mail from Parts Express saying someone with a Chinese IP address (111.12.128.167) is trying to guess my password.

I don't recall ever getting one of these before, at any other forum.

Typically when I see something like this, I imagine a security vulnerability has been identified, and the hackers want me to be concerned and change my password, at which point they can capture my NEW password.

Anyone else getting a message about password guessing?

No,and I'd be VERY surprised if PE had an information security team monitoring servers on this level.

If you can look at the email "headers", you can usually tell where the message originated.
Also, hover your mouse over any embedded links and look very closely at the URL.

You should forward that to PE.

No, it is a legit E-Mail, here it is:

HTGuide.com/forum has a banner warning at the top:

            http://www.htguide.com/forum/announcement.php?f=6&a=36

            ALERT: Member account hacking attempts!
Recently spammers in China have been attempting to log into member accounts. You'll know if they attempted to log into your account if you receive an email titled "Failed Login Notification on HTGuide Forum" when you haven't made unsuccessful attempts to log in.

If you receive one of these, let me know, either by posting in the Administrative forum here, or by replying to the email. Make sure to include the original email in the reply, or at least the IP address that made the attempt.

This is a good time to remind people about passwords. The best passwords are a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols. Common words should be avoided (so, if your password is "password", change it now!) This is especially important for the moderators and administrators here.

Thanks for your cooperation. I'll provide more info if/when I find it.
Looks like something is going around.

I got the same thing last last night. I checked the IP location and figured someone was up to no good but that it didn't require any action on my end.
              Thanks,

I've banned all Chinese IPs from my forum, as that's where 90% of attempted spammer registrations come from. The risk associated with allowing Chinese IPs access far outweigh any potential rewards.

Or the US Ambassador's who worked from a Nairobi bathroom to (edit: reportedly) avoid State Dept. IT.

...or the POTUS who stated he was unaware of Hillary's Gmail correspondence despite having received emails from her regularly. But who am I to talk? I haven't used my military email address since they made the switch from the ***@us.army.mil accounts to the ***.mil@mail.mil accounts. I told them if it was important to call/text me or use my Gmail account ...and it's worked like that for 2 years.
                          Thanks,

Hmm... they may be attempting to get your forum password because many people use the same log-in for everything including eBay, PayPal, credit card and bank accounts. So once they have your forum log-in then there's a good chance they can access your funds too.

That is actually one of the best arguments for forums (such as these) not enforcing strict password complexity rules.

As password requirements before more and more complex, people are inclined to start using the same few passwords for everything.
