  • The Chorales - An Usher / Vifa Project

Well, I promised my wife - and myself - that I wouldn't buy another pair of drivers until I started using what I have in the closet. So, in order to buy more drivers, I have to put together a couple of projects. Having just finished the crossover for the Renditions, I was itching to breathe some more saw dust. I had a pair of Usher 8945A woofers and XT25 tweeters that I acquired a while back from a couple of the members here, so here we are. This combo has been done many times in the DIY community, but who cares? I'm going to build myself another pair of speakers because I don't have enough. Hehe.

    Day 1.
Broke the woofers in overnight and determined T/S parameters, then loaded them in BassBox Pro to model the box, which volume turns out to be 0.6 cu.ft (17" H X 8" W X 13" D), tuned at 40Hz, with a F3 of 45Hz. The vent is 2" X 7".

3/4" MDF is used, and the pieces are ready to be glued.

    Day 2.

Just gluing away. In the mean time, I went to Zaph Audio to look at the measurements of the Ushers and the Vifas to find the best crossover point.

What else do you have sitting around in the closet not being used? Nice!

          Day 3.

Boxes completed. Interior lined with acoustic foam. Vent installed using Home Depot PVC pipe (2-3/8" OD), and glued in place with epoxy. The hole was cut with a Milwaukee 2-3/8" hole saw, so the fit was perfect.

            Day 4.

Baffles routed to countersink woofers and tweeters. Woofer holes chamfered and screw holes reinforced with birch plywood. Additional bracing added to baffles. Finally, baffles glued to boxes.

              Day 5.

3/4" roundover applied to top of box and to vent hole. This is what the project will look like before being finished. This weekend, I will mount the drivers and proceed with near field and far field measurements, then model the crossover.

I really like the way you dressed up the box with the added sides. I, however, would have considered a floor-standing mass-loaded or tapered TL for these woofers (I used an 8945A in my TL Cavatinas).

I made the same promise to my wife, but I find that I can distract her for a minute when the UPS driver
shows up, then the new drivers are safely in the basement.

                        Nice work!

Thanks everyone. The cab will probably have a black satin finish, and the sides will be real wood, but I don't know which kind yet.

Paul, good idea, that will give me an excuse to buy more drivers to try out a TL. Can I see a pic of the Cavatinas? Thanks.
