  • I don't normally do things like this

but I think I need a shoulder to cry on right now.
Just a few weeks after losing my job my sister became ill. She was diagnosed with a terminal illness a week later.
Last Monday she went for a follow up pet scan. It showed some incredibly encouraging results. She cried with happiness and relief. Her oncologist called her to share in the good news, she was amazed at the progress the treatments had made in slowing, and in some places, eliminating the disease that was taking her life.

Wednesday night she developed a mild cough and slight fever. We went for her regular treatment Thursday morning and the staff sent her straight to the ER. She was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia and some blood clots in her lungs.
She was stable for 2 days when her O2 level suddenly plummeted. Within an hour she was taken to ICU and placed on breathing support.

Sunday morning the ICU doctor called and asked me to come to the hospital to discuss her condition and her end of life wishes.
The poor girl was so shocked. The look on her face will haunt me the rest of my life. She was in complete disbelief. "What about the pet scan? It was so good. Is this the end? How can it end so soon, like this?"

We fought non-stop when we were kids. Strangers would have thought we really hated each other. But over the years as we mellowed and matured we became what can only be described as best of friends. Each understood the other better than anyone else.

She was often a great source of encouragement, often a harsh but utterly reliable critic of my work. If she said it was bad, it was!

And now she isn't here, and it hurts.

      Bob...

      You have friends here.
      Know that.

Regardless my poor ability to express it, my condolences are sincere.

Sorry to heat this, Tom. Though it won't go away completely, time/faith will ease.
You have your memories, so she'll always be with you.

May the Lord comfort you in your time of loss,
