  • Black MDF

    I was looking at this,

    http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/ScanSpeak-3W-Discovery.htm

    and saw this,

    http://packardforestproducts.com/pro....1LML6Vkf.dpbs

Apparently other colors (colours) are available in Europe, I found black in US in a quick search. I'm sure many of you are aware of this product, but it is new to me.

    Interesting.

Judging by the baffle I wonder if Elac use black mdf in their new budget range

I believe the material troels uses is valchromat which seems to be available in the USA via http://www.interlam-design.com/valchromat.html

I don't know whether it differs from the material in your link.

Shipping gets very expensive very fast.... Also looking for other exotic material - other than rockler carrying 12" x 8' bamboo ply, no luck finding any larger sheets locally... there are other paper composites, etc, but again, the amount of material required the cost + shipping is just a bit much.

Piece-o-sheet is one such supplier, nice stuff.... but will need to work with way more expensive drivers to justify the box  http://intectural.com/

One of those is my local BB and exotic lumber yard. If they have any in stock, I can take some pictures next time I'm there.

Has anyone tried milling Valchromat? It looks like it might be useful for waveguides, especially if these were integral to a baffle and denser than MDF.

Whoa! I just drove through Mt. Airy NC a few days ago. Probably will be back that way again shortly, when my daughter has her baby due Jan 16.

Those of you interested in distributors/reps in your area might check out the link in reply #3 above for the Valchromat links. Click the Contact button and look at their distributors list. Some of these distributors might know of specific lumber yards who might have supplies. Other distributors for similar products may have dealers below their level who have material. Worth a search.

I did an extensive search trying to find something close in Indiana, and the closest is either Elkhart or Indianapolis, and an hour+ drive seems a bit much to get wood.

I thought this might be relevant to this thread. I've built some cabinets from black valchromat and was wondering how to finish it (and couldn't find many pics online) so I tried some danish oil on some scrap, comparison with the raw sanded product. It produces a nice matte black finish by the looks of it.
