  • Ideas for a new desk?

I think it's time for me to build myself a new desk. The one I use now I built out of scrap plywood when I got my first apartment well over a decade ago. It looks basically like this. (*note: not my desk. This is just a photo I found on instructables. But this is generally the size and shape and layout of mine)

I mainly use mine as a solder station, small electronics repair, and as a laptop desk for gaming (oh, and and table for miscellaneous crossover parts, which can get REALLY messy... I think I may need to find a way to tame that beast)

I think it's served its purpose. Plus, my woodworking skills have improved drastically since then.

So I'm looking for inspiration. What do you use? Did you build it/hack it yourself, or go with something store-bought? What do you do at it?

I got an old corner office desk cheap at a resale company.
Plenty of room for what I need to do.
    Getting better!:D

Yes, the companies that buy used corporate office furniture have some good deals, especially on quality office chairs. It's a shame we're half a country apart, I have an extra desk I could "unload" on you for free.

My personal preference is as big a table top as you can accommodate to offer plenty of room for all kinds of work. I use a larger glass table now for my work-at-home job. I don't use draws as I have separate vertical files (and a pencil cup). I like my keyboard on top of the desk so I have a wireless keyboard/mouse that's easy to cast aside when working on electronics (you could re-use your keyboard tray). And I have an bar speaker mounted under my LCD screen to keep the work area open and wire free. I use an expendable board to protect the desktop when working on physical components with only the LCD screen remaining at the back of the desk.

Just my preferences to give you ideas.

Another idea is to mount a "countertop" against the wall(s) with maybe one leg where needed (hole saw and those desk inserts to allow wires up from underneath). I did that for my friend's handicapped brother with a wire raceway underneath to allow unimpeded movement in his wheelchair.

Re: Ideas for a new desk?

I had an older desk that I built when I knew nothing about woodworking, had no money, and wanted a big desk. It lasted almost a decade, and would have lasted much longer if it weren't such an eyesore. I took it apart and built a new smaller desk out of just the wood from top of that desk. It was my first hand tool only project. The legs are attached with mortise and tenon joinery, and the top with turn buttons. The finish isn't finished... but now that it's covered with stuff and useful, well, you know. It's not quite fine woodworking, but I am still learning.

I'm not sure if you'll find any inspiration from my desk, because your old desk looks nicer than my new one, but I did see a design that I really liked recently and maybe you will too:

I recently picked up a couple sections of a bowling alley.
Want to use one for a work bench and one for a bar height desk.
Two drawer bases and a pencil drawer from Menards should do it.

I don't know if there are any offerings in your area, but I look at the GSA auction site now and then. I have seen a few desks along the way go cheap, and would be easy to add an upper shelf to for a monitor and speakers. Or maybe you want to buy an old helicopter for the back yard.

Re: Ideas for a new desk?

I've built a few desks for myself and for work stations and retail shops

We use a pair of these......http://www.restaurantfurnituresupply...eBase_280.html

And then usually engineered bamboo plywood for the tops with a water based satin clear coat OR for extreme durability a poured epoxy coating about 12 mil thick

You can now buy phenolic resin tops.......really durable. Lay a soldering iron on it with no worries at all.

The local University has a surplus sale every week with lots of desks. Used office furniture outlets are a good place too look too. I had a friend who worked for an office furniture company and picked up this top and set it on a pair of half height file cabinets. The top is 6 ft. long. It's my main computer desk and linear storage unit as are most flat surfaces in my house.

I made mine from black iron pipe and a 1.5" Aspen top. I recommend 30" by 60-72" long/wide. I have multiple monitors and needed a really sturdy desk to set them on, so they don't wobble so much. Here's some pics of the top and frame (also pretty stoked about the cable management under there):

I would like to build this one some day. It may be too nice to use for a work bench though.

Btw. My computer desk is just a bullnosed shelve on two heavy duty file cabinets
I reinforced the back edge with an aluminum angle and mounted a dual monitor device

Here's my plan for a desk update. This is for a home studio, so the pedestal on the right is a 19" equipment rack while the left side will hold the desktop tower and have a couple shelves. For material, the uprights are standard 2x4, the table top will be finish grade 3/4" ply, and the shelves / trim and support pieces will be 1x8 hardwood. Material cost will be just under $200.

The pedestals will be on casters, and the table top will be bolt on so it can be broken down and moved easily. First I have an old cat that constantly f's up my basement, so I don't plan on constructing until that sorts itself out and I can gut and refurb the whole place.

Hanging at the gallery this AM. Dire Straits "Dire Staits" playing and here are the desks I built for the gallery. The boomerang shape is nice for computer workstatio. The other is a simple way to create a desk and works quite well.Click image for larger version
