Yes, correct. Also, you CAN always tie the grounds together....that's never a problem.

I don't ever recall seeing a three-way topology that didn't have either a resistor or cap first in the bandpass circuit.

Correct. But......Then there is a THIRD conductor, usually braided shielding that is connected at the source end and not connected at the distant end.
