Default need advise on project idea

One of the guys at school has all klipsch stuff and would like to get the rf-25's but would rather build some floorstanding ones. Now in an effort to make them kinda look like them i was thinking about using 2 hivi M6a's and then as far as the tweeter, i have no idea! What about Vifa's xt25tg30-04? I am open to ideas.

So do you think i should go with a horn? And which kind? I guess the question here is: Is a horn going to sound as good as a dome tweeter, and will sound quality matter to my buddie, or will he want it to "look" like a Klispch?

I don't have the spec sheet on the HiVi handy, but I'd look at another tweeter. The XT's can be a real PITA to tame properly. Despite the low Fs, they like to be crossed fairly high (no ferrofluid damping). Look at the DG Vifa in the $35 range. It's kind of a hybrid, using some of the XT technology but with a much better overall "designability".

As to the Klipsch idea, that's always intruiged me. I happen to be kind of fond of the "Klipsh sound", but I couldn't really tell you why. I think they're very forward and very in-your-face, which is downright amazing for live & acoustic recordings (they actually had me sitting through most of a John Meyer album). However, in other cases, they can sound TOO forward, quickly becoming fatiguing.

Still, how would one build a Klipsch-clone? Good question. You're right about the horn being the unique feature (the poly cone woofers are nothing special). Sadly, there aren't a lot of horn options in the DIY arena. You've got the piezo horns, but most of them are ghastly and the true CTS horns are becoming hard to find. Even then, well, the CTS is still piezo. Otherwise, there's pro-audio compression drivers, but quality becomes expensive and it's hard to find a horn for them that would result in similar response to your average tweeter. The final option would be to build your own horn and mount a tweeter to it. This last method is the most sketchy and the least researched. None of the three are really appealing unless you're willing to spend some money and do quite a bit of trial and error tweaking.

Also, there is a huge mismatch in SPL between the Klipsch & the HiVi's.

I am using the D27tg-35-06 in my mtm's right now and i really do like them. So i could use them again. I do wonder about the hi vi's...Agh i bet that they would sound good enough for what i am trying to aclompish. Can't sound too bad if Madisound and PE carry it.

Heres my advise, and i know it could be done.

Buy the Dayton woofer tester 2 from Partsexpress.com

then you email/phone Klipsch and tell them what speaker model you "HAVE" and tell them you need all 6 replacement drivers because your twin 5 year olds tipped them over and played with there trucks and toys and demolished them.

then when the drivers arrive at your house test there parameters, go to there website which supplies the cabinet dimensions, tuning frequncy, crossover frequencies and slope and clone the cabinets to the max.

Thats how you build exact Klipsch clones for about a thrid of the price.

I know im evil but in a good way, email me if you got any questions.

    > As for a compression driver that is inexpensive I would recommend pe# 260-084 or 264-225, or for a few bucks more pe # 264-235 will cross much lower. You should be able to cross the any of these drivers over at 2K because you will have to pad them so much the accostic slope of a 12 db crossover will becloser to 20db.
Any horn that fits the baffle nicely will work, even the cheap ones like PE # 270-095.
As for the woofer Klipsch used a lot of Poly cones but I don't think I would use a poly if a paper cone made a better option. I would consider a 4 ohm woofer if the amp will handle it so you can pat the horn 3 db less.

So do you think i should go with a horn? And

Indeed. What the hell. I want to know how they can get 102db@1W and STILL get decent bass response.
