HT Sub for under $100
Provided Link: http://chadgray.info/
A friend is asking me to build something for under $100 for his home theater.
I was thinking the Dayton 10" DVC or 12" DVC and the 70 watt plate amp.
Any other drivers or plate amps under $40 to consider?

He would not be disappointed with either SDVC 10" or 12" and the 70 watt amp. However, the 300-632 and even 300-634 should be considered, considering the ~$100 budget.

I'd tell your buddy to save up just a few more pennies and go with the 100W plate amp and the 12" SDVC. It's an amazing combination and the extra 30W is an extra 1.4db or so of headroom (which is a worthwhile gain when we're talking about such small amps).
However, whether 70W or 100W, I definitely like the 12" SDVC. It's pretty efficient, which will help get the most out of the few watts you've got to work with.

Third vote for the 12" SDVC
I am running it's 8" little brother with twin passive radiators and man is it better than I thought it would ever be. Jumping up to the 12" would seem to be the best idea for what you describe. I too would see if there is any wiggle room in his budget and get the 100W amp. That would be a nice sub for a great price. Or you could try an 8" Quatro..... Maybe the Noidster will hop in on this thread and give his two cents worth. I know he has built a small sub using the Quatro and the owner is as happy as a pig in slop.

Re: HT Sub for under $100
I've just designed and built my first subwoofer using the 12"sdvc and a 100watt amp, that i got a good deal on. I was leaning towards possibly getting the 300-632 or -634, but am glad I used the 12"sdvc and built it myself.
I adjusted the boost per pe's info and made a pretty big vented box ~4.5cf tuned (not measured) to ~17hz. The max. power the driver can take is ~30w i think, but it will go to 104db or so per winisd. The group delay stays below 10ms till somewhere in the 30hz range so music sounds good too. Too bad I can't see what it will really do since i'm in a 2nd floor apartment.

Hehe. Mine is fed w/ 120 watts in a 3.2 ft3 tube, tuned to ~29 Hz and it gets plenty loud/violent. ;-)
Star Wars AOTC, beginning (just after the title screen), aka "explosion of the big ship" to my kids, shakes things around my house.
Toy Story 2 intro/1st chapter - same thing- shakes stuff up without running out of steam.
Finding Nemo, I believe chapter 25, Darla/fishtank is very loud/violent, but represents the limits of the sub. (may be my tuning/lack of rumble filter) This is the only track out of the movies I have that really stress it out. Thus, I turn it DOWN to protect the driver.

I have "tested" it with the thx audio subwoofer test that is on the star wars dvds. It runs a sweep from 200hz to 20hz. No problems with overexcursion at 20hz, but otherwise I'm sure the max level is less than yours. One day i'll be able to really see what it will do
the mdf was scrap, so it only cost me ~110 bucks although the box isn't finished yet, just have the grill cloth draped over it so it doesn't get on the wife's nerves.
