    Default scan speak

So i was looking through my Madisound cat. and found the 18S/8531G.. wow cool driver, but would you guys spend $230 for one woofer? I mean my $30 vifa woofers sound pretty nice so does spending 7 times as much get me a seven times better sounding woofer? I would really like to try a pair of them, just trying to justify.

    The law of diminishing returns:
For the money, the revelator provides a well damped paper, cone, a low distortion motor, and lots of excursion capability. I’ve not heard the 7” Revelator, but have heard its 5” cousin. Yes, these are very good drivers, but depending on application, I wouldn’t expect them to sound 7 times better than their more pedestrian counterparts. -Maybe only 4 or 5 times… ;^)

I’d suggest if possible, listening to them in a well-executed design first, before plunking down your hard earned cash.

Pjay's law of woofer technology: the higher end the driver, the harder it is to tame.

So a moderatly priced woofer will sound better because you will be able to build a better XO.

Nothing I have found better illustrates the Law of Diminishing Returns than audio. Quality vs. price begins in a somewhat linear fashion. Beyond that for a noticeable increase in quality the price goes up exponentially. You just have to decide where you want to be on the curve Oh, and also factor in that increased cost doesn't always mean increased quality, but an increase in quality usually means an increase in cost.

    Default Curt’s Corollary:

The harder they are to tame, the more satisfying it is when you finally do so.

This corollary of course has universal applications…
