Thread: PE Vinyl Veneer

  1. #1

    Default PE Vinyl Veneer

I'm in the process of redo-ing some older speakers and I have decided to cover them with the PE Vinyl Veneer. I have decided I would like to cover the front with the Black pebble finish vinyl. I need a recommendation for the sides and top and bottom. Would the Black ash vinyl look good or the Cherry vinyl? I guess my main question is, do the two blacks (the Black ash and the Black pebble) match or are they different shades of black? Also, between the Black ash and cherry, does one look better and appear to be of higher quality? If anyone has any pictures of what the vinyl looks like on their speakers that would also be great.
    Thanks guys.

Darren used the cherry vinyl on those and they look pretty darn good. I personally would go with the black pebbled fronts and cherry but that's just my taste in things. The black ash vinyl looks good too but I'm not sure about them being the same tone of black.

Use the cherry. It looks good with the black pebble, and is easier to work with than the black ash. I have not seen all the PE vinyls, but I have seen the birch, both blacks, cherry, and red maple, and I think the cherry looks the best.

Here is an unfortunately not very good pic of speakers built with the cherry (another budget speaker -- UBHT Towers -- made with 5/8" particle board [see thread below about MDF or PB]):

Having just covered my buddy's sub in the cherry, I didn't mind it, but it honestly doesn't look much like actual cherry. Just a bit too much of a purple component and the grain structure just looks wrong to me.

What can I say, I'm a big fan of the maple. ;-)

    Mark,

I used Black Ash and cherry on these. They work great together. As an earlier poster said, cherry may not look authentic, but I think it looks good, any how.

    > Mark,

This picture shows the black ash wood grain texture around the woofer, and genuine solid cherry in the background for comparison.
