Default Bandits on the loose! ...project complete *PIC*

Provided Link: RJB Audio Projects - Bandit

I just finished my Tang Band W4-1320SB dual-reflex fullrange speaker design. I'd like to thank Wolf for suggesting the dual-reflex cabinet design... it works great! The details are at the link below (and there are a lot of them). Check them out and let me know what you think.

Looks great Roman! You put these together quick!

I have not had a chance to read the web site. In a nutshell do you like the bamboo drivers?

Should you have used the 3" version? Or is the 4" perfect?

That's pretty much to the point Chad. Roman do you know if they sound better than the Hi-Vi B3S for $10 because that one sounded a lot better than $10 should or the TB W371S I think is what it was? Just curious if the cost is really worth it sound wise. Regards, Paul.

    Thanks!

I like the bamboo drivers a lot. They sound a lot like metal cone drivers with a lot of detail in the midrange.

I like the bass extension of the 4" driver but don't like the narrow dispersion that is a result of the larger cone. I'm sure that the 3" would have better dispersion but not much better. Also I would think that the 3" version would have more harmonic distortion below 200 Hz and I don't think I could deal with the 12W rms power handling and meager 0.5 mm xmax (the 4" has 25W rms and 3 mm... much better!) These little speakers can really play LOUD for their size.

Sorry, but I've never heard that HiVi driver and for that matter I've never heard any other fullrange drivers before either so I'm not much help in that regard.

Default I'm a believer in DCR now too

I heard Wolf's little DCR aligned TangBands tonight for the first time. Man is that some very astonishing sound from such a small speaker. He really got the most out of a 3" driver for sure. We found out too that the drivers he has might be the only ones in the country. There are probably a few others out there but who knows really. They are flat out staggering in sound quality. He's sold me on the design too.

Yeah, the dual-reflex cabinet is very nice. I just wish there was a simulation tool out there that could allow you to simulate the bass response from this type of design but I haven't found one yet. I would have like to have compared the dual-reflex version to a ported version but I didn't feel like making extra cabinets that would later be thrown away. I did however clamp one of the cabinets together without the brace/divider installed and recall it having less bass than the completed dual-reflex cabinet but this wasn't a very fair comparison. In theory the bass response should be more extended due to the original tuning frequency of 75 Hz being spread across the 67-75 Hz range. Aside from reducing the cone excursion, I don't know if it is a good thing to have the 150 Hz port frequency as opposed to the sound coming from the driver instead but I don't notice any ill effects from what I can tell.

My only complaint about this design is the poor high frequency dispersion of the driver due to the 4" cone size. I noticed that the fact that the driver is paper/bamboo makes this worse when compared to a metal driver (more pistonic I suppose). Anyways they do a great job of turning my old 2 channel system into a nice 5 channel setup as long as you sit in the sweet spot.

    Thanks!

By the way, what do you think of the TB driver so far? You mentioned on your site that the midrange was different than the Fostex but didn't really say whether it was better or not or give any details of the sound. I've found that mine sound very clean and clear and a lot like a metal cone as opposed to a paper composite cone. Good luck with your cabinet construction. Compared to the three ways I've been building lately these were a breeze so it didn't take me too long to finish them and that PE vinyl is so easy to apply and looks pretty decent too.
