Darth Truck
92 Chevrolet 1 ton. Sarah named it "Darth Truck" since it's big and black. Since she named our Subaru and it stuck, we decided to go with it.

Darth Truck needs a sound system.
I'm looking for oddball ideas and experiences people have had putting component sets in 88-92 GM fullsize trucks. I have an old set of Boston Pro 4.4 and a never been used in a car (currently in .6 ft^3 boxes in my basement) Pro 5.4 as well. the stock dash locations look pretty big (the spaker grille is bigger than the speakers...) but they fit a 4x6.
I'm thinking of trying to put a three way there. 5.25", 4" and tweeter. Back waves would be directed down through the stock speaker hole via damped tapered transmission lines. I have a pair of Rally series 5.25" from a component set, vintage ~1995 I think, that had good performance as a midbass. I don't like the sound of any of the kickpanel installs I've heard. I still localize the soundstage at my feet. I think I have the bass figured out...

Re: Darth Truck
Installed a full Alpine system in a friends regular cab truck about the same vintage. FYI... there is very little room in the dash!!! The speaker pockets are wide but very shallow. Also there is not much room for a head unit, very shallow pocket there as well. He had a 3disk changer in the dash, which is bigger than other head units, and it stuck out of the dash 2.5". That's as good as we could do.
We replaced all the stock speakers with Alpine 2ways and 3ways, somehow sandwitched two 10 or 12 subs in wedge box that took all the room behind the seat, and powerd it with 240w/ch of V12, 30w each for dash, doors and C-pillar channels, and 150w/sub. Sounded AWESOME!!! Loud and clean. You should have no problems getting good sound with the bigger cab.

I have the Scoshe adapter kit, looks like it pokes the HU about that far out into the cab.
I was going to build pods to take the drivers and just use the stock holes to vent the back waves. Are the rear speaker locations able to take bigger drivers without a problem? Also, where does the back wave vent for the rear speakers? This truck has 4x6 just below the upper seat belt mount in the back.
Subs will definitely be in a center hump console I will build, that goes all the way to the dash. The front will look like a snowplow to allow heater air to get to the footwells. I haven't measured it yet but I hope to get 4 10" drivers in there. I need .3ft^3 each, and I'd like to use the upper portion of the console for storage, etc. I may build a new console all the way to the back of the current stock console and use the stock covers and cupholders, etc.

Yes.. there is just a cavity between the inner plastic and outer sheet metal body... nothing too big. If I remember correctly, the replacement speakers we put in were origional size, but had bigger magnet assemblys, and that was about the limit you could fit in there. You won't get much low end out of any of these stock speaker locations. We used actice crossovers on all amp channels in the install I did, so stock locations were hi-passed at 80-100hz. No point wasting amp power on these little drivers when there are 2 big subs going in there.

I have an extended cab 4x4 now and I built a custom sub enclosure to fit beneath the rear bench seat, housing 2 8" subs. I would have liked bigger drivers, but that was the maximum I could fit. Even at that, the drivers sit on a slight upward angle, and the enclosure is a really odd semi wedge shape because the floor is not flat either. One of the good things about newer subs is they don't need much enclosure volume. It sounds great and that's all that matters.
