Powering options

I am in the middle of building my first ht setup and realized I have not considered what I am going to power with. My setup will be 4 of Daves dayton 8's(front&rear <A HREF="http://www.wadsnet.com/~dtenney/dayton_8MTM.htm">http://www.wadsnet.com/~dtenney/dayton_8MTM.htm</A> ), 1 Unicc center speaker( <A HREF="http://www.partsexpress.com/projects...nicc/index.htm">http://www.partsexpress.com/projects...nicc/index.htm</A>. I know that the Dayton 8's are 4ohm's. I was considering Onkyo TX-SR602 but I am not sure if they are 4ohm stable. Please give me some suggestions. My budget is cheap to moderate. I am looking for a a/v reciever to power.

I have the Harman Kardon DPR2001. 4 ohm stable, big heavy Power Supply and rated in true RMS. All around it has all the right features, bass management, video switching etc... Also they have an ebay store so you can pick up great deals on refurbs.

The Onkyo's are a good product, and IIRC, some of the guys here have that brand and it seems to be able to handle 4 ohms, but I'm not 100% sure. I do know that Yamaha is very good also, and can do 4 ohms. Maybe someone that has experience with Onkyo can help. I've been using Yamaha for 30 years (still have my CR-420 & CR-620 receivers from the 70's and they work/sound beautiful!) and they have never disappointed or needed service. Just my experience, YMMV.

I just bought a Yamaha RX-V1500 two weeks ago for $697CDN. This great receiver is being replaced by Yamaha with the RX-V1600 which will have an xm tuner and a few other goodies.

You should be able to find some great "end of the model line" deals on this model or its twin, the HTR 5890. Both these models have almost all the features you need to decode current source material and deliver clean sound to your speakers.

I don't remember for sure maybe the 1805? the 400 price point should give away which one it was though. The last time I heard them she had no center.

Consider a last years model Marantz or Integra as well. The Integra is a great unit, basically the same as the Onkyo stuff but with gold plated connections and better warranty. You can find last years models pretty cheap usually at their authorized retail shops in your area.

We bought our Yamaha RX-V1300 on model clearance 2 years ago for about $620, and we are extremely happy with it. That model was being replaced with the 1400, which I'm sure was replaced with the 1500, and so on...

Anyway, it is a hefty 33 lbs, and they claim it can handle virtually all loads. They specify that it will handle 4 ohms.

I would definitely wait for an open-box or closeout deal from an electronics store. I saved $200 on a $400 receiver that was a store demo model. Just make sure you get a good warranty.

The only problem I see with the Onkyo receiver is that it does not upconvert composite and s-video signals to component video like the new Denons and others do. Might not be a problem for you, but I like to use my receiver to switch between DVD, TiVo, VCR, and Cable box without changing inputs on TV. Makes it much easier for universal remote programming. Also, only one set of cables (component video) going from receiver to TV, instead of two or three.

If you are not going to use a universal remote check the supplied remote to see how easy it is to use. I had to get a universal remote for my Denon b/c the Denon remote was so bad. Really bad!

As the others suggested, the RXV or the HTR series are great performers, have the latest features, and will handle a 4 ohm load. The other brands mentioned have positives, as well. Just make sure you get the features you want/need with respect to home theater and surround sound. With a sub, variety in the bass management area is important, and the units recommended do that well.

Some also have neat set-up features that automatically perform tests so the speakers are set up correctly. I can't speak about those specific features, as my Yamaha HTR-5240 is a few years old and doesn't have that capability. You really can't go wrong with any of the choices presented here, as it's a matter of price and features. Good luck...let us know what you end up with.
