Driver displacement in box considerations??
Sorry I couldn't think of a catchier title...
I'm considering a Dayton RS180 in a .75 cubic foot box. This speaker seems to have a more substantial displacement than other silmiar sized drivers that I have used in the past. Is this something that needs to be worried about from a practical standpoint? I'm guessing that it probably won't make an audible difference one way or another but I wanted to ask.
How large of a driver would I have to use before it becomes a problem or does it remain a nonissue since the enclosure voulme typically increases with driver size?
Just wondering.
Thanks,
Aaron D

Box sizes are always given as net. Displacement of braces, drivers, ports, etc, must be factored in. Differences on the order of 5% are OK.

The space taken up by the driver is pretty miniscule, really. Your average big-magnet 12" driver takes up less than .09 ft^3. So when you're converting from cubic feet to cubic inches for the math, just add a little fudge factor. If you plan on stuffing the box the stuffing will dwarf the driver's displacement, anyway.
And the actual excursion of the driver doesn't figure into this, because drivers move both directions. You wouldn't make the box smaller to account for its travel in the other direction.
