Default Finished RS HF 3 ways

Well almost!,I have spent the last 2 months working on a pair of three ways for a guy I know,I have only got the cabinets done so far,any way he was getting impatient so I put one of them together for him to hear, and holy cat cheese they sound awsome!

Im using the RS28 tweet,RS180S mid and 10"RS HF for bass,I havent built the xover yet so I borrowed one from another pair of three ways, right now its crossed at 250 and 3000,The mid enclosure is .65 cu.ft.w/2x8"port and the bass is 1.75 cu.ft.w/3x10"port,They will ultimatly have a longer bass port but I need to get an elbow tomorrow.(small town and nothing open on sundays) Im running it with my Carver M500T amp bridged and at 4 ohms it puts out 700 watts,The speaker takes all the power I can give it without any hint of distortion. They sound very very clean and smooth

I cant wait to hear them with the proper crossover the cabs lined, and the ports tuned, I have found the combination of drivers I like and will be starting another pair as soon as these are complete

Crossovers are my weakness, and I am wondering others suggestions on X-over points and types,The only weakness so far is a little boominess, but I think that will go away as soon as I lengthen the port.and the tweeter is a little hot. Any suggetions on the X-overs would be greatly appreciated! I'll post some pics in a little while.

    Thanks! Aaron Hero

Man Aaron, you make some of the nicest speakers i've ever seen, i think that you need to pony up and get a measurement setup. You'd be unstoppable. My suggestion ( this is what I did ) is to get your buddy, who you are building these speakers for... to get you Soundeasy as payment for your troubles. Everyone makes out there... your buddy gets WAY better speakers, and you get a measurement system! That said, i don't really have any suggestions as to an xo, other than the fact that you are too ambitious not to own a measurement setup.

xover pro is never gonna be up to par w/ what you are cabable of man.

    http://www.htguide.com/forum/showthread.php4?t=13154

try that for an xo for the upper end... i dunno what to do about bandpass/woofer xo ... and especially levels.

the problem is that xo components effect each other ... and its really hard to predict w/o measurements. best of luck

I live in northern California in the small town of FallRiverMills,Its Between Mt.Shasta and Mt.Lassen, I told my bud about your suggestion of that he buy software for me,Unfortunately I built these for him for cost,so he chuckled,I will probably buy it anyway and charge the next guy! After all I havent made a profit off any of them yet as I didnt feel comfortable profiting on my experimental projects,Heck I even gave away one pair to a guy who had no speakers and his wife was mean and wouldnt let him buy them!I am to nice for my own good! DUDE! Man, your bud totally misses the point! Those are NOT CHEAP speakers you've got there, and they can only get better if you get measurement software. Most likely he's enjoying something thats mediocre ...rather than enjoying something thats really enjoyable!!! Sounds like your bud doesn't know what he has, otherwise he'd jump at that opportunity to make his speakers MILES better. Go half w/ him on it or something... either way i can almost guarrantee that those speakers are not even CLOSE to what their potential is w/o a measurement setup. I mean that in the most complementary way possible.. those speakers can rock... they just need their potential to be unleashed! rock on

    Aaron,

You've got the most beautiful and aerodynamic speakers I've seen. Attach a turbofan to those, and they'll take off by themselves! Who does the CNC cutting for you?

I wish I had a CNC it would make things alot faster! On this pair I made patterns so the next should take alot less time,I will cut the next pair with a router and pilot bit,All the curves on the sheet goods were cut with my table saw, much cleaner than a jig saw. Thanks!

I dont think you could have a more fitting last name after hearing that story, especially if you gave him one of those really nice sculpted looking towers you make. Those look better than 90% of the commercial speakers out there, your EFFIN pro

Default Curves on a table saw?

I know it can be done, but how? More to the point, how do you do it safely?

    TIA,

I can cut any curve safely and easy on my table saw up to about a 48" radius, Just draw a line and cut, depending on how thick the material is,if its more than a 1/4" you have to trim up to the line a little so there is only about 1/2" of material away from your line, but you do have to be carfull because it must be done free hand.If you dont have much time on a table saw or don't feel confident, dont do it! It can also be done with a skillsaw just as easy but not as precise. Aaron Hero

    Default Nicely done Aaron!

    Definitely first class craftsmanship!

I will echo Matthew’s suggestion about the measurement software. IMO, with such a complex baffle, it will be very difficult to construct a crossover worthy of such a beautiful speaker without measurements.

FWIW, SE has a steep learning curve, so I have read. Speaker Workshop is free, and with the tutorials now written, may not have the steep curve it was once known for. I don’t know, I’ve never tried it, but it might be worth a look.

FWIW(2) As I’m sure you know, this will be a power hungry design, as the sub is only 87 dB. Hence a passive speaker design will have a sensitivity around 83 dB. Are you planning on bi-amping to compensate for this?

Aaron, you have a masterpiece there. I thought that when you posted the first pair you did like this and I stand by that appraisal. If I were your friend, I would get a DCX2496 and some amps and go active. They are going to suck the power down anyway, so ya might as well do it up in grand fashion. They deserve it for sure.

    shawn

P.S. Beautiful home and family you have there.

Thank you! I have considered using the DCX2496 being that it would probably cost the same as building a passive xover, but wasnt sure what was involved with it,can it be used either single or biamped? and would I need any additional crossover components to make it work in this situation? any idea? Thanks for the suggestions! Aaron Hero

Forget Soundeasy. You should do some wind tunnel testing. Those things look fast... )

    Hi Aaron,

Your cabinet work seems outstanding. If you are ever in the Sacramento area, I'll be happy to measure them for you. You could get a reasonably good crossover with a set measurements. It's too bad this post wasn't 3 weeks ago; I was just in Redding and could have brought up the portable measurement system.

Anyway, email me if you're interested and want to try to work something out. I think you cabinets deserve a high quality xover.
