Default in search of budget woofer to go with DOTD

I want to order the tang band tweets for a HT set up, but I would like to find a woofer that would work with them. I want to go as cheap as possible without getting cheezy. box size doesn't matter, and larger woofer is better.

    any ideas?

How about the Dayton RS 7" or 6" drivers?

If you want a nice 8" driver with a very flat response to above 2KHz, then you have to look at Peerless 830869 Nomex driver. Should be a perfect match and get you a real nice system. Even the 830884 with the right XO would be excellent. It has a bit more resonance above 2KHz than the 830869, but not so bad that it can't be tamed. Not only that, but it will play into the upper 30's with the right ported box.

But if cheap is really what you're after, try a pair of DA175 Aluminum cone woofers. They're good to 2KHz with the right XO and less than $17 each.

Yeah, I'd assume that by cheap, he meant Dayton Alum/Classic cheap. I say either the Aluminums or the 6" Classic... Dunno much about them, but they seem popular.

I agree that Tang Band does have some quality control issues, but when you get a good batch they can sound excellent. My Microbe project (RS125 & TB T25-1166S) has received more praise than any other project I've built! There is a guy who just built a pair for his son for Christmas who will be giving me a reveiw to post on my site. He gave me a preliminary reveiw and he was extremely happy with them and had nothing bad to say at all. John Krutke measured the distortion of the TB tweeter and it shows that it performs just as well as any high price tweeter above 3kHz (which is where I crossed it).

So before you make any crazy generalizations like that I would do some more research (unless you were being sarcastic and it flew right over my head). I try to steer clear of TB drivers because you never know what you're going to get (kinda like a box of chocolates) but when you do get a decent batch they can sound great. I might be building a pair of Microbes for a friend in the future and I was wondering if I could pay extra to get a matched pair or I might just buy 4 tweeters and pick the best two.

It's sort of funny because somebody was criticizing me for naming those speakers "The Microbes" because he thought that it meant a disease. Well, they are living up to their name because they are spreading like crazy and they are even mutating as well. There's already been one design using the RS28as instead of the TB. I have several MTM versions including woofers in parallel, woofers in series, 2.5 way and a 2.5 way with additional resistance to keep the impedance above 6 ohms. So what started out as a single Microbe design has multiplied into 6 different variations and many duplications. So I would say that the name is appropriate. Maybe I'll have to name my next speakers "The Moneymakers!"
