Default Bookshelf Speakers - driver recommendations

Folks,

I have an old Mission MKII Model 7 enclosure that I would like to install new drivers in.

The internal dimensions are: 7 1/8 x 7 1/8 x 12 5/8 inches.

The woofer was: 75 watt, 8 ohm 6 in.
The tweeter was: 3 3/4 in diameter.

Any recommendations with regard to good but cheap replacement parts - and ideas for a simple cross over.

My 7 year old son, has been asking for speakers since he has been exposed to his older brothers and my system. I don't think it is music appreciation that is motivating himm but sibling rivalry.

Thanks
Jim

Hi, Jim...check through the Project Showcase for similar sized (volume) speakers. It looks like a little under .4 cu. ft. for your boxes. Maybe the BR-1 drivers/XO combo...or either the DBP, DHT at www.speakerbuilder.net. Also Dave Brown has some terrific budget designs at http://users.d-web.com/dbrown/speakers/speakers.htm
Obviously, it might be difficult to find drivers that will drop right in. Is there a mortise/recess that the woofer/tweeter fit into? If not, then you'll have more possibilities. An option I have done is to make a new baffle (front board) to fit right over the old one, like in the photo. If you don't have access to the right tools for this, then maybe finding a driver that fits into the through-hole is your only choice. Either way, you'll end up with something that will be better than what you could buy for alot less money. This design came from Lou C. over at www.lonesaguaro.com, the "Topaz". If I can be of further assistance, let me know. Good luck!

If you don't mind a little extra work (adding a port - 2"dia probably, it can (should?) go out the back if that works out for you) Dayton's 295-306 6.5" woofer should work very well in that box. I'd use the 275-070 tweeter (if it's available yet?) and follow the xo in the Shielded BR-1 plans (there's a pdf of the manual on this site). If you need more help I'd be glad to.

If you really need an ACTUAL 6" dia. (exact) woofer, then your choices will be limited. 6-1/2 is most common in that size range.
