Side firing 15" Subwoofer!

How would a Dayton 15"TitanicIII driver perform if it were mounted on the side of a large tower? Is that an application that could work,all the proper considerations taken?..Jon.

Jon, as long as the XO freq. wasn't too high, it should work, as long as you use the volume it needs and keep the volume separate from the other drivers. I know others here have done what you're looking at using the appropriate sub amp. I'm definitely not a XO expert, so I don't know what the XO freq. should be, but with an amp, that will be adjustable.

Thanks.The plan is to use one of the PE 500 or 1000 plate amplifiers for each tower.Using the plate amp's will provide the ajustable xo's.Now it's a matter of designing in the proper volume..Jon.

Gotta be careful with side-firing. Keep in mind how subwoofers interact with the room, especially when you place them in a corner. If you have your towers with the side-firing woofer too close to a wall, the resulting behavior can be kind of crazy.

That being said, many, many successful commercial designs use a side-firing woofer...

The 15" Titanic has a fairly heavy cone. Depending on how wide and how heavy your towers are, and whether they are spiked to a solid floor or resting on carpet, that much weight in motion might introduce some side-to-side vibration. The bass will have more impact if the box doesn't rock in reaction to the cone movement.

You might consider using two 10's or two 12's and mounting them on either side of the enclosure. This way the wobble-modes would be cancelled out.

Well if he has the woofers mounted down low enough on the sides, the pitching to and fro might not be a huge issue even with the big mamma jamma Titanic. It's when the large heavy drivers get mounted higher up and it affords a longer lever arm in relation to the base which is your pivot point. I have done such a design albeit with an RS 12" HF and it's lower moving mass and I do see some movement but it's not enough to get me worried. I wouldn't even try the same thing with my Titanic. His design is gonna be huge!!!

Those Reference Series woofers are very high quality at a very reasonable price. I'm using the RS 12HO in one of my (commercial) designs and I'm very happy with it.

The way the design is coming together,it will be a large tower.There's 2 RS125's and a RS28 up top in a D'Appolito configuration.Also a pair of RS225's handling the bass.It be patterned after the Verity Audio "Lohengrin".[www.verityaudio.com] .The differents being,the sub will be side firing instead of rear firing so that the cabinet won't be as wide and dual 8" drivers as opposed to 1 8" in their design..Jon.
