    Default PE's Vinyl Laminate

Any opinions on the vinyl laminate that Parts Express sells?
I know it's not veneer, but how is the finished product if applied correctly?
I want to refurb some old boxes.
    TIA

I've used the Black Ash vinyl and the Red Maple vinyl on large speakers. Both look very good all things considered.

The Black Ash just has a texture to it, not any sort of coloring. If you look at it in the wrong light it looks rather fake. That being said, it doesn't look bad at all. It just looks like any laminate covered speaker you'd find ad best buy.

The same is true for the Red Maple as well, but from a distance it tends to look more like believable wood.

I'd use the vinyl for a quick finish but don't expect the speaker to look like a fine piece of furnature -- rather it will look like a piece of electronics.

sucks! Ha ha, gotcha :-). In all seriousness, I have used the black ash. As stated above it looks like a speaker instead of a hand rubbed finish. The biggest advantage to using it is speed. You can cover both boxes in no time at all and you're finished with finishing. Not so with paint/lacquer. Coat after coat after week after week. You get the picture.

I have an entire room full of matching furniture that I made and covered it with PE red maple vinyl. If you take your time with it, your projects will come out looking like store bought speakers. I like it because it is easy to use. In addition to my surround sound system which are all floor standing speakers, I used it to cover an equipment rack I made and a coffee table which I also made. I'm very happy with it. The bonus is that if someone beats up the coffee table, I can just replace the veneer with another matching piece.

I've used it, but I wasn't very patient with it, so it didn't turn out at all.

Wish I would have read this before I did my active woofer boxes! They turned out well enough for their intended purpose....
