Default Enclosure for 15" Quattro, how big, good designs?

I have seen a variety of enclosure sizes for the 15" Dayton Quattro, going to be used for home theatre/music. I was looking at Bill Fitzmaurice's Table Tuba, modified for the 15" quattro

Maybe like the T36 on this website as well.

I have also seen many 5'ish cubic feet ported boxes. Is this the most popular or recommended size? (seems awfully big) I don't need sub 20Hz bass, but would like to have solid sub 30Hz response for home theatre, also I don't want ANY overexcursion problems on loud movie tracks.

    Thanks, Jake

It seems that you need to have a large (5+ cubes) vented box to get a flat response down to 20, so if you aren't looking for that kind of response you could do fine with a smaller sealed design.

Excursion will be the result of your enclosure design, so just use an app like winISD pro and you'll see what the results will be before you build anything.

5 really isn't that much if you get creative with it though.

I built several Quattro 15 subs for friends at the end of last year using the Quattro with dual 15" passive radiators in a Parts Express 3 cubic foot box. The passives mean added expense, but give very good extension in a small(ish) enclosure and also help address your concerns of overexcursion that a classic vented enclosure can exhibit.

For passive radiators I used these:

They just happened to be at an attractive price and needed no mass adjustment in the system. How often does that happen? Too easy! Dayton DVC series Passives can naturally be used as well (I remember modelling them at the time), but will require added mass and are nearly twice as expensive. Dayton 500 Watt Subwoofer amps were employed and proved to be well matched to the systems.

I apologize for having no photos. I'll contact one of the owners to see if he will take some pix for me. If so, I'll post them later.
