I'm working on a "modular" cabinet system that would allow builders to assemble speaker cabinets of any volumn between .25 and 11 cu ft with only a screwdriver.

What I need is some input about the baffle and side widths and incremenets -- that is what is the minimum (inside) width (6"? 8"?) that would be useful and the size of the "step" between sizes (2"?)

The general idea is something that the builder can assemble/disassemble with a screwdriver for testing, etc. but that will look good enough that they can be glued together as a finished speaker.

    Any ideas? Suggestions? Fond wishes?

Due to several reasons, I've (personally) settled on using a cab whose width is 1" greater than my driver frame (provided the box doesn't get to big to allow this, IMHO 5cf is too big). So I use 7.5" od for 6.5" woofers, 9" for an 8", 13" for a 12".

I see an awful lot of posts stating that the target baffle for the XO design was 9" - if you do a 6.5 with a half inch on either side, then 3/4" sides that gets you there. Am MT or MTM with 5.25 to 6.5 would work, and even a three way with side firing woofs would be doable, given various depths for 8s, 10, or 12s. Sounds like a very good idea - assuming shipping costs are reasonable (well, what can you do) There should be quite a market for this - good luck !

Are you using the box's inside or outside measurements?

So would these 5 widths cover the sizes needed for the baffle?

    woofer--baffle width
    size (inside/outside)
    6"----7"/8.5"
    8"----9"/10.5"
    10"---11"/12.5"
    12"---13"/14.5"
    15" 16"/17.5"

Thanks for the encouragement -- may be needed!

Looks like you posted while I was posting about the sizes -- would 8.5 be close enough?

I am sure that could work - was just thinking about ease of application, I mean, those who would be your market would not likely want to do much themselves. I measured my Pl18s, and some Scan 18w8544s, and they both are 7" fronts, even my Davis 16s are 6.5", and using the 7s on a total width of 8 would mean scalloping the sides a bit, or having the basket nearly touching the inside and leave no room for foam or other treatment. Only 6.5" insides is pretty tight - having said that, my pl18s are in a cab that is 8" wide, and I did scallop the sides to get clearance, and could not use corner blocks or bracing at that point inside. I'd mock some up and play away.
