Thread: Amp choice

  1. #1

    Default Amp choice

I am trying to choose between the Crown CE4000 and the QSC PLX3402. Which one is the better amp?

Pretty much apples and oranges. The real question at hand is... Do you want to weld 1/4" mild steel, or 5/32" mild steel? I think the Crown is heavier... May be better if you do a lot of heavy loads. But if you do a lot of equipment schlepping, the QSC may turn out to be the best - after all, it's better to have dope in times of no money, than money in times of no dope...

The Crown is 33 lbs, the QSC is 21 lbs.

    What application ?
    Buying new or used?

You can make a better decision if you know what
you will do with the amp.

If I had both, I'd probably run CE for bass and
PLX for mids/tweeters as the CE4000 design is
BCA, the other CE series is not.

I chose a ten stack of PLX3402 mainly because my
application had real estate limitations, a
stack of PLX is ten times 2RU chassis size
which is a smaller footprint than a ten
    stack of 3RU amplifers.

Both are very good amplifiers, so it will depend upon your application and personal preferences. The CE4000 has the edge in flaky power situations with it's PFC system, but the QSC should produce more power at 4ohms bridged.

Thanks for all the advice. The amp is for home use andweight does not matter much. I am looking for the ability to deliver lots of clean power to difficult loads.

Use the Crown and run a dedicated 220v circuit to it.

SO does the Crown. BUT... either of these is a full load for a 15A 120v circuit. The Crown has a universal power supply that will accept any input voltage. So if you provide a 220v line for it, you are guarantee'd full output into the most difficult loads, while keeping the current draw on your household circuit at a safer level. I believe you can also get 220v versions of the QSC, but it would be a special order.
