DOTW + Dayton silkie

What would be the ideal crossover point for the DOTW and the Dayton silkie?

And while I'm asking, What is the difference between a 2nd order Linkwitz-Riley and a 4th order, what are the pro's and cons of each in a 2 way design. I'm just trying to understand.

Yeah, neat, but I clicked on "order everything with one click" and total was $7,080!!!!

Seems they slipped in a couple of things not on the original list

Took out the "feedback destroyer" and a few other things and got more like $70.

I actually just hit the "Submit Order" button on the DOTW and some x-over parts.

I have a pair of DIIIs right now, and i'm going to route the holes for the woofers a little bigger to fit the 7" aluminum DOTW. i'll keep the silkie as the tweet (its a pretty good tweet, although the respose graph wouldn't suggest that, plus i can always upgrade that later). projected f3 in the DIII cabs with the 7" alums and the same port is about 35hz in unibox.

using PCD, i've got the alums crossed @ ~1800hz with a third order electrical (fourth order accoustic) and the silkie with the same (3rd->4th accoustic) @ ~2000hz

~3.5db BSC built in and a .51ohm resistor on the (parallel) woofers to keep the system impedance up above 4ohms.

Lowpass
R1 = .51 ohms
L1 = .65 mH
C1 = 20 uF
L2 = .44 mH
zobel C = 33 uF R = 4 ohms

Highpass
R2 = 4.3
C2 = 6.8
L3 = .27
C3 = 22
zobel = 2.2 uF R = 6.5ohms

this might not be the most optimized or even flat response, but i already have the x-over parts from the DIIIs and some other projects lying around, so i figured id save some cash. i probably could have gotten away with lower order x-overs, but i'm lazy and i have some other things to get done today so i didn't want to spend the time playing with it. looking at it quickly though, the silkie is rather well behaved and could probably get away with a second order, but the 7" alum would take some serious work to integrate well with only a second order. but then again, i've never heard that driver at all, so maybe a 2nd order enough to tame it.

i have to admit that it was kind of an impulse to order the parts to tear apart my DIIIs, as i really do love the sound that i get from them, but as is mentioned all too often, the mids really do leave something to be desired. plus i already had 2 of the DOTW lying around waiting for a different project to build itself ;') so i figured it would not be too much work to just experiment and upgrade the DIIIs.

i hope it turns out alright because the cabs will not really be anygood for the 6.5" classics after i change the wooofer cutout size. i think that all should be good though.

please leave comments, i'd be interested in hearing what people have to say, maybe i could do a formal write-up for the projects section if people like the idea

Up this thread Shawn A is working on a crossover for the drivers you requested. 2nd order = 12dB per octive roll-off and 4th order = 24dB per octive roll-off. The 4th order crossover will use twice as many components compared to the 2nd order.

OOps, The Daylums use the 5 1/4 driver with the silkie, not the DOTW but maybe a better match? also 70 bucks sounds like one speaker....

Why not build a new "removeable" baffle to test the new drivers. The test baffle can be screwed to the existing front baffle of the DIII's and removed again if you prefer the original classics. The slightly reduced cutouts from the original baffle should not be too restrictive just for testing. If you prefer the new drivers, then enlarge the cutouts like you intended.

I intend to make any future systems with removable front baffles. Interior access is much better and substitution/experimentation becomes easier, too.
