Thread: 4-ohm vs. 8-ohm

    Default 4-ohm vs. 8-ohm

What is the difference between a 4-ohm and an 8-ohm speaker? Am I right in thinking that the 4-ohm is harder to drive?

A 4-ohm driver, all else being equal, will be roughly 3 dB more sensitive than its 8-ohm sibling, but will require twice the current from the amplifier with the same output voltage applied. If the amplifier is capable of driving a 4-ohm load, it will be no problem. But, if it’s not… -You might let the magic smoke out of the amp… 8^(
