Sub Drivers Xmax
Provided Link: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshow...number=264-854
hello, i was wondering on how the Xmax of a driver is classed/or finally stated... for example the TANG BAND W8-740C 8" SUBWOOFER is specified with an Xmax of 12mm... is the 12mm the full/overall linear excursion? or is it just up 12mm and down 12mm? i just found out that its about 25mm=1inch sorry for such a question. i dont know if its obvious but im still...

Re: Sub Drivers Xmax
I think that X-max is the distance the cone will move from its resting position to full linear extension, either to the front, or rear. In other words, the Tang band sub you're speaking of would move it's cone forward 12 mm at maximum excursion, back to center position, then backward 12 mm. This equals 24 mm peak to peak, but it's X-max would be 12 mm. If you go over X-max, then the coil is not under the control of the magnet nearly as much, and bad things could happen!

xmax is the point at which enough of the voice coil leaves the magnetic gap so that the output becomes non-linear and distortion exceeds 10% (or so.) xmech is the mechanical limits of travel before failure or damage. Some manufacturers list xmax as a one-way travel number (meaning it can go that far in either direction before distortion becomes unacceptable) and some list it as total travel. Generally the better manufacturers list one-way motion.
