An alternative - media server
My PCs are nowhere near my stereo so I hooked up a OmniFi media server. This device connects to your reciever and will stream MP3s, WMAs from a PC anywhere in the house via wireless or wired network connection. The media server has a remote and a little screen on it to let you browse your music library by artist, album, songs. playlists, etc. I paid $80 for the Omnifi because is it a discontinued item. Other brands are more expensive.

Most PCs have a SPDIF interface. Many receivers have digital inputs. A fiber link would be ideal for long runs.

XBox - XBMC (XBOX MEDIA CENTER)....it's what i'm planning on doing. I have a friend that did it to his xbox and i was VERY impressed with the server capabilities of it (not to mention you can still play xbox games on it). You can pick up used xbox's for $25 off craigslist, pop in a 200 gig HD (Or connect it to your network and pull media off your server) and you've got one bitchin media server. XBMC even works with the XBox remote...and don't forget that it can also act as your DVD player.

...As long as there aren't any sharp corners or bends!...Seen a few "high performance" fiber networks installed only to have bandwidth results on par for the 70's due to some moron bending the wires too tight and cracking the glass :-/ Same would apply for audio I would think - but for eliminating any problems of emi fiber's the way ta go!

Re: p/c to receiver link
I got a Chaintech sound card from NewEgg.com for $24. It has a great DAC and its digital output goes via a toslink optical cable to the toslink input on my HT pre/pro. Great, great sound. Couldn't be happier with the quality. If you can use a toslink cable this sound card is a great value.

Re: p/c to receiver link
I'll go one better. In a PC someone put out on the curb I found it had a SoundBlaster Live! card in it. Cost=free! PCs I'm seeing in the trash now are Pentium III/Athlon 800 Mhz to 1 Ghz. I'm going to make a media center PC from a nifty horizontal Gateway case, Pentium III 800 mhz, SoundBlaster Live! card and ATI all-in-wonder video card. All found in the garbage.
