Does anybody think that the people who are going to buy these things might be interested to know that most enclosure material is chosen for it's ability to NOT color the sound? It is a clever idea, though. I've put TB 3"s in wine crates to spice up the decor...

Now if they worked with thw wine barrel shape, that would be way mor interesting !! But to take a nice shape like that, and then deform it into an ORDINARY box seems pretty darn silly to me !!!

I've found the better way to dampen resonances is to soak the listeners in whiskey.

JVC makes woofers out of wood pulp soaked in sake, while Pioneer makes enclosures out of wine barrels. Combine the two, then drench me in Heineken...

Hmmmm... interesting concept, though of course if the enclosure vibrates, it's a bad enclosure!!

Is it me, or does it seem there's a increase of "marketeers" out there... Style over substance, baby, you know you gotta have one!!

I had a concept idea that never happened for a few reasons.. a Wine Barrel Subwoofer!! (buddy of mine started a winery up in No CA a few years ago) I couldn't easily get a barrel for cheap enough down here in So CA... my buddy would have them and I was willing to try building one if they wanted it.. 250L, put a port in it, modeled everything from a Q15 to a Seleneum 18" pro driver... The 18" and tuning to 20Hz would have been awesome. Especially inside his 300'long storage cave!!

Problem is, a barrel when dry, would shrink back up, get loose, you'ld have to seal it inside and out or it would eventually fall apart. They talked me out of it... I leave it up to someone truly crazed.. like Bogie!! ;-) Paint them up with "Gunpowder" or "High Explosives" and they should fit right in the decor, man!

A few little points on this (I think that the 50 year claim is a load of crap):

    1. Whiskey barrels are made by charring the inside of an oak barrel. The whiskey moves back and forth through this charcoal layer with temperature and humidity variations (whiskey aging is done is fairly open warehouses).

    2. Whiskey barrels are a one shot deal - they are not re-used. Old ones are either sold off or are shipped to Scotland to be used as Scotch barrels (they really love American oak). They aren't re-used because the filtering and chemical absorption process isn't very good after the first time.

    3. Nobody ages the whiskey 50 years in a barrel. The alcohol evaporation rate is about 2% per year. That's why Scotch isn't generally more than 20 years old - the yields would be too small to be practical. Whiskey aging is usually only a few years at most.

    4. When the barrels dry out, the acoustic properties will change. I've got a wine barrel at home and I wouldn't even think about using that wood for building a speaker. This sounds like marketing BS.

Whats science got to do with speakes? Bose has sold millions of speakers using junk science
