lumber for speakers

what is the best lumber for speaker enclosures? i see mdf used alot but would rather not because of the fine dust it creates and the weight. im thinking of birch or oak 3/4 ply.

MDF is used because of its acoustic properties. Marine-grade plywood is the next best choice, IMO.
