Got my pro. fan in for my rack *PIC*

I got my pro. fan in for my rack and man what a dope I am. This thing is hugh and pretty noisy. I meas. 65db from 3ft away. It's heavy duty for sure with 100cfm. It's keeping me cool right now LOL. I hope being in the case quietens it down some, dang. Otherwise, I need a smaller fan. Jeez, this one could cool my whole bedroom.

Same size 100cfm. I don't have an spl meter but guessing I'd say 65db.

Do they sound quiter inside the rack? Maybe I'll mount it in the back pushing the air out the back so that it will be further away from the front and listener. Plenty of air circulation from this guy

If my googling serves me well, thats a 119mm fan that puts out 100 cfm, correct?

What you really need is one of these bad boys: link. 119 cfm and only 92 mm. I have one in my computer and I swear its like having a hair dryer attached to it. Cools well though. Only problem is that its DC.

Ask about fan stuff over at the planar asylum... Some of the guys have been replacing the fans in Crown or Behringer amps with quieter versions.

I suggest that you check out fans that are made to be significantly less noisy than the traditional type of fan. A good source is the PC market. See for instance:

I have a 30yr old 1000w mosfet amp, when I got it the fan must have had a bad bearing or something.. it was like starting a turbojet !!!

Changed the fan, now its only a dull roar !!!

For a given air flow, larger fans will move the same air with a lower speed. Quieter and what noise there is will be lower in pitch.

Look for quiet PC web sites, they will steer you toward quiet fans.

I have a bunch of old computers with power supplies. Can I just take one of those out and use it as the source of power? How can you wire a power switch to one? Thanks, Paul

I would use a 120mm fan. less rpm to get air flow, less noise. My new computer case has 120mm fans. I am amazed at how quiet it is, compared to the old smaller fans.

You would have a ton of capacity in that one PS, and could probably fill the rack with fans to run off of it.

As for a power switch, if your PS does not have one built in, its going to be hard to actually swith it on and off. I would look for a fan controller, like you would use in a PC, to control it at the fan level. See the link for a basic model. Not only could you turn the fan off, but you can also just control its speed. They sell versions that will control 4 fans or more, but I am not sure you would need that.
