    Default i blew a hl10c.... great

So i finished the Tuba 24 tonight and decided to give her a try. Well i guess i really do need that subsonic filter and i don't know what else. I thought i was only doing 400 W but it went and i took it out, and the coil and the cone were detached, so i hope PE takes it back.
AGH so agrivating! At least it happend here and not at a gig.

So YOU blow a woofer and hope PE takes it back?!

    That's not gonna happen.

Hey, Aaron... It could be defective...

Did anything break or the cops get called before things quit working?

    Default detachment

Like i mentioned in my post, the cone and coil did come apart. I duno.. i'll just have to call em. It's a peavy IPS400 briged. A) i need a sub sonic in a bad way, and B) Bill mentioned that this would proabably work best @ 300W not 400W like i think i was proaably using... ooops. Regardless.. i don't think i have ever seen a woofer go in 15 min.

What kind of source audio were you feeding it? And was it really turned up all the way?

A filter is a must, but so is a limiter. A 400 watt amp can put out 4000 watt transient peaks, and that will toast a woofer in 15 milliseconds. A detached coil is a sure sign of overexcursion, and that's only caused by extreme overpower.

I agree w/Aaron on this one - a 400 watt amp MIGHT be able to put out an 800 watt transient, certainly not 4kW. And a 4kW 15mS transient peak wouldn't even hurt a Vifa P13, let alone a 10" with a 2" VC. If the coil is detached but NOT burnt, knocked out of round, or had the edges crushed from hitting the backplate, the woofer was defective, plain and simple. Those Eminence woofs will take a few good solid overexcursion pops with no damage, but won't hold up *indefinietly* that way. And if you do damage it, the coil will usually suffer some mechanical damage, and the surround or spider may rip. The tech guys from PE or Eminence can determine if the damage was caused by overexcursion, and in this case it might very well not be.

I've had two instances where drivers came fresh from the factory and the adhesives hadn't really had time to set up properly and they failed. In both cases, PE replaced it. When you get a recone, they caution you not to go blasting it right away, and instead break it in slowly. Same reason - the glue is fresh and things can come apart with "normal" use.
