    Default 6 1/2 " versus 8"

    A quick & simple ( I hope ? ) one :

I am building a sub. The box is soon ready. Measured the inside , and realised that the DAYTON 8" Quattro that I was planning of using might not fit ... or is really close of fitting.Maybe simply will not go.

Should I try it anyway ? For better results.

    OR should I revise my plans , and go for 6 1/2 " instead ? Maybe 2 Pyramid 6 1/2" ??? As they are really cheap ...

Have to make a decision , as I am filling already the order form to PARTS EXPRESS !!!!

What will I loose , or gain , by going which ever way ???

Any tips & ideas , greatly appreciated !!

1 - What is the box volume?
    2 - Ported or sealed
    3 - Objective/Music Listened to, etc.
    4 - Budget

I really like the tangband 6.5" subwoofer, and their 8" might fit your box as well

Like speaker guy said give us that info. There are many more musical subs or woofers that can provide cleaner sound than that one.

So sorry guys , I (stupidly) though the answer would be so obvious.... it seems it is not !

1 . The box is about 20 liters ( ? ) . Can make it smaller (inside) by putting sealed baffles inside.I have about 4" for depth.

    2 . Sealed.Made out of MDF.Strong and solid , all seams caulked & glued & screwed together.

3 . Objective ... just to improve the existing system.I already have a sort of OK set-up. From the factory. Heard a similar car , with only one added amp & similar sub box that I am now building & only 1 sub. Was VERY impressed with the sound. That was PRO made , cost +1000$ ,ouch too much for me ! That is why DIY !!!

    4. Budget , extremely tight !! Spent a lot of money for this car already.... I have one Sub Amp lying around.Intend to use that. Building the box ( a custom one , fits superbly , not visible at all etc etc ) , hoping to squeeze DAYTON 8" in it. So less than 200 for the whole thingy....Covering it with stock looking tan fabric , to make it stealthy....

    Did this help at all???

I will double check the 8" Dayton size. If it fits , I will try that.

    Wish me luck....

In 20 liters sealed, the 8" Quatro will only reach into the 60's (not counting "cabin gain"). You really should port it which will enable it to reach an octave lower (so . . . into the 30's).

A 2" dia x 6" long port will tune it properly, but will probably chuff. A 3" dia x 15" long port would be better.

SORRY , forgot to mention that I intend to make it smaller , about half the size. I calculated on a BASS BOX program in my PC , that this element should work nicely in just under 10 liter box. And on Partsexperss site , they recommend a 0.2 cubic feet one. Sealed box. The 0.2 cubic feet recommendation is under 10 liters , right ???
