Idea...
I am in one of those creative moods. i want to say i have asked this once but am not sure so here it goes.
This is a center channel idea. What if you had a center channel speaker that had two parts. Mean two seperated cabs. One above the tv and one below. each having the same cabs and same drivers.
Just a thought. I figured it would give really good imaging, but was not sure, so i thought i would ask.

Re: Idea...
Might do a good job of placing the dialogue in the center of the screen. Not sure it would help imaging, but it might make the dialog more believable - especially if you have a really big screen.

That was my idea... I just thought it might make a difrence on a 27" tv... If you dont think it will then i wouldnt even bother puting anymore though into it..

Diffraction
If you were sure you could lock your head at precisely the height of the vertical center of the screen, this might make sense. At any other height you'll get lobing because the path length to your ears from the upper and lower drivers will be unequal. A 27" TV has a screen height of a bit over 15". Add three inches or so for the TV's case and you've got 19 inches. Assuming you're using low-profile CCs, you still have to add at least five inches to get the center-to-center distance of the drivers.
Assuming sound travels at 1100 feet per second, that distance is a full wavelength of about 550 Hz. Expect lobing to become an issue above that frequency.
I thought about doing this once, but it quickly became apparent that this particular cure is worse than the disease.
Sorry to be a wet blanket.
